Another big singles effort propelled Mohawk to a 3-2 win over Turners Falls in a Tri-County League North girls’ tennis match Tuesday in Buckland.
The Warriors (8-2, 3-2) won all three singles matches, dropping just three games in total in the process.
“I was really impressed with our singles today,” explained Mohawk coach Chris Seaver. “All three girls played the best I’ve seen them all year.”
Mohawk senior Lilly Seaver won a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 1 singles over Turners’ Carlie Kretchmar in a match that featured any lengthy rallies.
Mohawk received decisive wins at second and third singles as well, with Mary Monohon defeating Amber Taylor, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2, and Rosalie Kinsey picking up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 against Rachel Tucker.
Turners (4-7, 1-5) swept the doubles matches against Mohawk. Haleigh Greene and Isabelle Farrick teamed at No. 1 for a 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 win over Mohawk’s Avery Dupree and Sienna Lewis. At No. 2, Steph Peterson and Ceci Wood defeated Chloe Doyle and Haley Randall, 6-2, 6-4.

Belchertown 3, Turners 2 — It was a solid effort from the Turners Falls boys’ tennis team, but the Powertown fell a point shy in a 3-2 loss to a very good Belchertown High School squad Tuesday in an independent boys’ tennis match in Turners Falls.
Turners (4-3) won two of the three singles matches against the Orioles (10-1). Brian Poirier was a 6-4, 6-1 winner at No. 2 singles, dispatching of Joshua Tan, while Will Turn claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 against Aiden McCarthy.

Pioneer 77, Turners 68 — Turners Falls head coach Ron Hebert said he wasn’t surprised to see his team’s meet against Pioneer Valley Regional School come down to the final 4×400 meter relay on Tuesday.
In what Hebert described as a common occurrence when the two teams get together, the final result was in doubt until Pioneer captured the 4×400 with a winning time of 5 minutes, 15.8 seconds, and the visiting Panthers claimed a 77-68 Intercounty League girls’ track & field win in Turners Falls.
“I’d probably need more than two hands to count the number of times that’s happened over the years,” said Hebert of the number of close meets with Pioneer.
Sydney Unaitis took wins in the 200 meters (31.2) and 800 meters (3:04) for Pioneer (1-4, 1-4), while Liesel Nygard won the 100 hurdles (19.3) and long jump (13-4¼).
