WORCESTER — Police in Massachusetts are investigating after a homeowner shot a man he spotted on his property.
Worcester police say at about 12:45 a.m. Sunday the 56-year-old homeowner saw a man dressed in black look into a locked car on the street and then walk into the homeowner’s yard.
Authorities say the homeowner got his gun and confronted the intruder. The men fought and the suspect allegedly threatened to shoot the homeowner. At that point the homeowner fired several rounds.
The suspect fled, but at about 1:30 a.m., police got a call from him reporting he had been shot.
The man, identified as 29-year-old Zackery Bailey, was treated and then arrested after police discovered he had an outstanding warrant for breaking and entering.
The homeowner is a licensed gun owner and is cooperating.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Lawmakers in Rhode Island are considering letting senior citizens reduce their property taxes by volunteering for their cities and towns.
State Sen. Cynthia Coyne, a Democrat, introduced a bill that would authorize towns to offer tax credits for people over 60 years old in exchange for volunteer hours. The Senate Finance Committee held the bill for further study last week.
Towns would structure their own programs, but the bill calls for granting volunteers the equivalent of a minimum wage in credit. It would cap the credit at $1,500 annually.
Newport has a program that allows seniors to earn up to $500 in tax credits, and similar programs exist in Massachusetts, Maine and Pennsylvania.
Coyne says many retirees struggle to pay property taxes and the bill would help ease that burden.
MEDFORD — Police in Massachusetts say a juvenile is facing drugged driving charges after striking and killing a woman before hitting two more pedestrians and killing their dog.
The driver, whose name was not released because of his age, eventually came to a stop at about 5 p.m. Sunday when his SUV struck a bank in Medford.
He was apprehended there.
Police say he had a learner’s permit but no license. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Cambridge Juvenile Court on charges including operating under the influence and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
The woman killed was identified as 64-year-old Judith Moses of Brookline.
The man and the woman with the dog were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Their names were not disclosed.
