The Franklin County Children’s Advocacy Center will be holding two flag raising events to bring awareness to child abuse this Friday.

The events are being held in honor of April being Child Abuse Awareness Month, and will fly multi-colored flags in Greenfield and Athol, as a way to bring awareness to the issue.

“The flag is a symbol that the abuse does happen right here in Franklin County, but it also shows the resilience of children and families,” said Mary Kociela, director of Domestic Violence Projects for the Northwestern District Attorney.

The event in Greenfield, which is also sponsored by Mayor William Martin’s Domestic Violence Task Force, will begin at noon at the Greenfield Town Common. It will include a brief concert by Federal Street School students and speakers from the Department of Children and Families. Police and the Northwestern District Attorney will also be represented.

The Athol event will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the town’s police department. At the event, Police Chief Russell Kleiber will be speaking.

The flags will fly for the entire month of April.
