GREENFIELD — A chimney fire left a house at 76 Smead Hill Road damaged after crews from across the county worked quickly to suppress the blaze.
Smoke poured out of the chimney of the A-frame single-family home as firefighters sprayed fire-suppressant foam and water to knock down the fire that began around 5 p.m. Sunday.
The chimney became weaker and some pieces fell off as the heat and fire weakened the structure. Around 5:30 p.m., crews sprayed foam and water up through the chimney. Crews on a ladder knocked out the pipes in the chimney.
Eversource Energy shut off power to the home around 5:45 p.m. as a safety precaution.
Around 6 p.m., Greenfield’s tower truck brought firefighters up to the chimney to better target the fire, since the sides of the structure were still smoldering, with the occasional flame.
Eventually, the tower crew completely knocked down the chimney as crews on the ground sprayed the falling debris to ensure all smoldering material was put out.
Among the crews called to the scene were Greenfield, Colrain, Bernardston, Orange, Turners Falls and Northfield. Tanker trucks supplied water from a hydrant at the bottom of the road.
Additional information was not available at the time, but it appears that no one was injured in the fire.
