NORTHFIELD — Police Chief Robert Leighton is now a nominee in the race for the selectman’s seat that Jack Spanbauer will be vacating in May after his tenure of 17 years.

Following the caucus on March 6, the only nominee for the position was Alexander Meisner. (The Recorder mistakenly reported that Bethany Walker was also running for the position; she is in fact the incumbent and only candidate for a position on the Board of Assessors.) Leighton gained a spot on the ballot after the caucus by collecting 25 signatures of residents supporting his candidacy, 23 of which were valid.

Only 20 signatures are required to nominate a candidate for the Board of Selectmen.

Leighton did not respond to requests for comment on Wednesday.

The election is scheduled for May 8.
