GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Commonwealth Virtual School will now offer dual-enrollment so that high school juniors and seniors can take college-level courses for credit.

The school, with administrative offices in town, will allow eligible students in its program to take courses at the Massachusetts public university, provided the student meets the requirements of the institution.

“Dual enrollment is a way for students to get a sense for potential college majors and more deeply explore subjects they’re already interested in,” GCVS Executive Director Judith Houle said in a press release. “We have a lot of nontraditional, academically advanced students, and we’re always trying to give them more options for personalizing their learning.

Dual enrollment can also help the colleges by creating a pipeline of potential students.”

It was first initiated through Greenfield Community College, but will offer courses through other colleges, too.

“Our students learn online, but if one of them wanted to take a hands-on subject like a health sciences class, for example, they have the option to pursue that through this program,” Houle said.
