TURNERS FALLS — A new logo for Turners Falls High School is on the horizon, despite many suggestions to keep the controversial Indian.
Submissions to the TFHS Logo Task Force were closed as of Jan. 31, said task force member Alana Martineau. On Feb. 1, the task force completed a preliminary screening of submissions to eliminate inappropriate suggestions and those that did not meet the criteria.
“I’d say three-quarters of (the submissions) were requests to keep the Indian,” Martineau said.
As of Feb. 13, School Committee members received the list of screened submissions from the task force. The committee will review submissions and discuss at the Feb. 27 committee meeting.
The school district is looking for a new symbol for its school and sports teams following the School Committee’s abolishment of the long-time Indians mascot in Feb. 2017. This followed months of public debate over the mascot that began in 2016.
The task force was scheduled to meet Feb. 15, but the meeting has been rescheduled to March 1 following the committee meeting.
