GREENFIELD — While all snow days may seem equal to students around the county, Wednesday’s storm brought a gentler version of winter weather.

With the brutal cold stretch behind us, Wednesday’s action was just a “typical winter in New England type of storm,” meteorologist for the National Weather Service Allen Dunham said. “There’s nothing really extraordinary about it.”

Morning measurements

Early morning snow measurements tallied 4 inches for Deerfield, 4.5 inches for Greenfield, 5.5 inches for Ashfield, 6 inches for Conway and 7 inches for Colrain.

There were a few accidents in Greenfield from when the snow began to fall Tuesday evening. A pickup truck hit into a porch on Mill Street and then left toward Deerfield Street. A car went over an embankment before the town line on Leyden Road, leading to no injuries.

“There were a handful of accidents, but not anything unusual you wouldn’t see out of a regular snowstorm,” Greenfield Police Lt. William Gordon said. “People are used to the snow by now. We typically have more problems with the first and second snow.”

In addition to people getting used to the snowstorms each year, Gordon said he often sees the type of snow as influencing potential accidents. The wetter and icier snow naturally leads to more accidents than the fluffier kind that dumped over Franklin County on Wednesday.

Massachusetts State Police, Shelburne barracks, reported that there weren’t any snow-related accidents overnight.
