SHUTESBURY — Sometimes cookies make education a little easier.
In order to teach residents about Ranked Choice Voting (RCV), several Democratic Party Town Committees will host a family-friendly event on Sunday, Jan. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m at Shutesbury Elementary School. Attendees will experience a hands-on demonstration of the voting method by voting for their favorite cookie while speakers from Voter Choice Massachusetts give a presentation on RCV.
RCV is an approach to elections that allows voters to choose multiple candidates rather than casting a ballot for one. By ranking choices, an “Instant Runoff Election” can be conducted if no candidate receives more than half of the votes.
This method is gaining acceptance across the country since it eliminates the need for vote-splitting, assures that winning candidates have true majority support, and allows for greater party unity, according to a press release from the Shutesbury Democratic Town Committee.
Cookie tasting and ballot counting will take place between 2 to 2:30 p.m.
