MONTAGUE — Have an idea for what the new Turners Falls High School mascot should be? The Logo/Nickname Task Force is looking for submissions from community members, students and alumni.
Those interested may send their submissions by mail to P.O. Box 514, Turners Falls, MA 01376, or by email to submissions@tfhslogo.com. The task force has also created submission boxes at all of the schools, including Erving Elementary School.
Alana Martineau, a task force member, said the group is working to generate interest in the process from the students and community.
The group of volunteers answers to the Gill-Montague Regional School Committee but is independent of the committee. The task force is charged with getting submissions from the public, evaluating and narrowing down those submissions and getting public input.
The task force said that any submitted proposals should conform to the previously established criteria, which can be found on the district website www.gmrsd.org.
The school district is looking for a new symbol for its school and sports teams following the school committee’s abolishment of the long-time Indians mascot, which is still a sore point for many people in the community who wanted to retain the traditional mascot in the face of complaints that it is racist and out of touch with current sensibilities.
