Tiffany Papesh scored a pair of goals as visiting Pathfinder Regional Vocational Technical High School blanked Franklin County Technical School, 3-0, in a Tri-County League girls’ soccer game Wednesday afternoon in Turners Falls.
The loss dropped FC Tech to 7-8 overall, 6-7 in the TCL. The Eagles need four points in their final three games to earn a postseason berth.
“It’s a disappointing loss and hopefully we can get back on track because there’s no guarantees we can make the tournament playing the way we’re playing right now,” explained Tech coach Dan Prasol.
Pathfinder (9-2-1, 8-1-1) led 2-0 at halftime, as Papesh and Hannah Schipano scored first-half tallies before Papesh added her second of the afternoon in the second half.
Tech goalkeeper Tabi Hamilton recorded 11 saves in net, while Pathfinder’s Mackayla Weldon turned away seven shots for the shutout.
The Eagles have a big home game Friday when Duggan Academy comes to town.
Four Rivers 5, Buxton 1 — Five players found the back of the net as Four Rivers Charter School claimed a 5-1 win over Buxton School in a River Valley Athletic League girls’ soccer game Wednesday in Williamstown.
Anna Goldstein, Michaela O’Donnell, Maddie Soulia, XiHu Arsa and Joy Bohonowicz all tallied in the Four Rivers win, with Eolann McMillan, O’Donnell, Goldstein and Bohonowicz registering assists.
The Otters earned the third seed in next week’s playoffs and will likely host The Berkshire Arts & Technology Charter Public School (BART) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
Monument 1, Mahar 1 — Jack Temple scored on a penalty kick early in the second half and host Mahar Regional School salvaged a 1-1 draw with Monument Mountain Regional High School in an independent boys’ soccer game Wednesday in Orange.
Robert Baldwin tallied just one minute into the second half for the visiting Spartans, but Mahar (7-4-3) responded when it was awarded a PK just minutes later. Temple buried the shot, and the teams held each other off the board from there for the 1-1 final.
Goalkeeper Alex Gurganus recorded 11 saves in net for the Senators, who were outshot by a 12-6 margin.
Mahar coach Dan Guertin lauded the play of sophomore Logan Dodge and senior Jamie Teele, as the duo stepped into the lineup and played very well in a game against a strong opponent.
“Having those two kids step up was really cool to see,” Guertin offered.
The Senators need one point in their final four games to qualify for the postseason. They’ll get their chance today, when they host Mohawk Trail Regional High School.
Wahconah 5, Greenfield 1 — Donovan Keegan tallied three goals and host Wahconah Regional High School picked up a 5-1 win over Greenfield High School in an independent boys’ soccer game played Wednesday in Dalton.
Cole Accardi and Colby Lennon also scored for the Warriors (3-11).
John Diaz had the lone goal for the Green Wave, with the assist credited to Alex Carballo. William Lopez recorded seven saves in the Greenfield net.
Greenfield falls to 0-12-3, and the Wave are back at it Friday when they host Pioneer.
Pioneer 10, Duggan 0 — Jordan Loughman scored three goals and visiting Pioneer Valley Regional School rolled to a 10-0 win over Duggan Academy in an independent boys’ soccer game Wednesday afternoon in Springfield.
The win puts the Panthers at 11-1-1 overall on the season, and they next play on the road at Greenfield High School Friday night at 6.
Holyoke 3, Mohawk 1 — Three goals from Holyoke High School star Katie Keane was the difference, as the host Purple Knights put themselves in prime position to win the Bi-County League thanks to a 3-1 win over Mohawk Trail Regional High School in a battle of the top two teams in the division Wednesday night at the Roberts Complex in Holyoke.
“We had a hard time in the first half,” admitted Mohawk coach Lynn Hoeppner, whose team fell to 11-2-1, 6-1-1 with the loss. “Their turf is really fast and the ball moved nicely on it. We had a little trouble controlling possession.”
Holyoke (13-1-1, 7-0-1) led 2-0 at halftime, thanks to a pair of first-half Keane goals. Mohawk cut the lead to 2-1 with 16 minutes remaining, as Ashley Walker scored on a give and go from Shelby Sinistore with a blast from the top of the circle.
Keane tacked on an insurance goal and lifted Holyoke into sole possession of first place in the BCL.
“We pulled it together in the second half and executed much better but just couldn’t get the goals we needed,” Hoeppner said.
Mohawk held decisive edges in penalty corners (13-2) and shots on goal (8-3).
The Warriors host Frontier Regional School Friday in what should be a very entertaining independent game in Buckland.
Turners 1, Palmer 0 — Cassidhe Wozniak’s goal with just 4:39 remaining in regulation lifted visiting Turners Falls High School to a huge 1-0 victory over Palmer High School in a Bi-County League contest Wednesday in Palmer.
Wozniak tallied off an assist from Aly Murphy, breaking a scoreless tie and helping the Powertown to its sixth win of the year. The team improved to 6-7-2 overall, 3-5 in the BCL, and very much still in the hunt for a postseason berth.
Haleigh Greene recorded 10 saves in net for Turners, which held a 12-10 advantage in shots and an 11-6 edge in penalty corners.
Turners travels to play Southwick Regional High School in another big game Friday afternoon.
Frontier 24, Hampshire 32 — Carsten Carey’s time of 17 minutes, 42 seconds put him atop the pack, and visiting Frontier Regional School captured a 24-32 win over Hampshire Regional High School in an independent boys’ cross country meet Wednesday afternoon at Stanley Park in Westfield.
Frontier (12-0) put four runners in the top six in the 3.1-mile course, with Ben Litskoski (third, 18:00), Peter Carey (fourth, 18:25) and Dan Dejnak (sixth, 18:37) also running well. George Balis finished 10th for the Red Hawks in 19:22.
Hampshire 15, Frontier 50 — Hampshire Regional High School swept the top seven spots and the Red Raiders captured a 15-50 win over Frontier Regional School in a girls’ cross country meet Wednesday at Stanley Park in Westfield.
Sophia Prouty won the race for Hampshire, traversing the 3.1 mile course in 20:59.
Two Frontier (8-2) runners cracked the top 10. Fiona Ferry took eighth overall in 22:45, while Greyson Young was 10th in 22:55.
South Hadley 21, Mahar 3 — Corey Sanderson and Treyton Pasakinskas took 1½ points each as visiting Mahar Regional School dropped a 21-3 decision to powerhouse South Hadley High School in an independent golf match Wednesday at The Ledges in South Hadley.
Sanderson shot 48 at No. 1 for Mahar (6-9), while Pasakinskas had his team’s low round of the day with a 46 at No. 2. Tucker Ninteau shot 52 at No. 3, while Brandon Green shot 53 at No. 6.
South Hadley’s Zach Kotfila was match medalist with a 1-over 36.
Amherst 18, Pioneer 6 — Kyle Maynard fired his team’s low round of the day, posting a score of 41 to earn a point at No. 1, but Pioneer Valley Regional School dropped an 18-6 independent golf match to Amherst Regional High School Wednesday at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Amherst.
Garrett Cote won three points for Pioneer at No. 2 thanks to a round of 43, while Jake Fuller (50) and Cam Baird (52) each captured a point on the afternoon.
Anna Casagrande was the medalist for Amherst with a 38.
