After falling behind 1-0 midway through the first half Tuesday, the Mohawk Trail Regional High School girls’ soccer team recovered in a big way.
The host Warriors scored four unanswered goals, rallying for a convincing 4-1 win over McCann Technical School in a Pioneer South girls’ soccer game in Buckland.
Aimee Dowling put the visiting Hornets up 1-0 in the 24th minute, scoring on a penalty kick.
Mohawk (4-9-1, 3-4-1) tied the game just six minutes later when Mary Monohon scored her first of two goals. She tallied again just four minutes later, and the Warriors had a 2-1 lead at intermission.
Ashley LaCross scored twice in the second half, with Jaxon Palmer earning an assist, and the Warriors pulled away for the 4-1 win.
“That (penalty kick goal) kind of sparked the team,” admitted Mohawk coach Steve Tomi. “It was just a good come-from-behind win, something we really needed.”
It was the second straight win for Mohawk, which is off until next Tuesday when it hosts Smith Academy on Senior Night in Buckland.
Gateway 1, Mahar 0 — Gateway Regional High School sniper Jessica Van Heynigen scored the game’s lone tally with 33 minutes remaining in the second half, and the Gators squeaked past Mahar Regional School, 1-0, in a Pioneer North girls’ soccer game played Tuesday night in Huntington.
“We played OK but that’s not good enough against a quality team,” offered Mahar coach Chad Softic of Gateway.
Becca Herman made two saves for Gateway to pick up the shutout, while Mahar goalkeeper Elysha Bedard also recorded a pair of saves between the pipes.
Mahar next travels to Hopkins Academy next Tuesday.
Pioneer 11, Greenfield 0 — Emily Raymond recorded a hat trick and Cierra Buzzell added a pair of goals as Pioneer Valley Regional School rolled to an 11-0 win over Greenfield High School in a Pioneer South girls’ soccer game Tuesday night in Northfield.
Pioneer (6-5-2, 6-2-1) jumped out to a 7-0 lead at halftime and never looked back to stay within striking distance toward the top of the Pioneer South with just three games remaining.
Sammie Martinez, Kaylee Gibson, Eva Pruitt-Dahl, Liesel Nygard, Sarah Johnson and Kayla Sadlowski all found the back of the net for the Panthers on the night. Martinez recorded a pair of assists.
Pioneer hosts Smith Vocational & Agricultural High School next Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
Hamp Charter 4, FC Tech 2 — Brooke Adams tied the game 2-2 in the second half, but Hampden Charter School of Science scored the final two goals to capture a 4-2 win over Franklin County Technical School in a Tri-County League girls’ soccer game played Tuesday in Chicopee.
“The girls played really hard in the first half but our energy dropped in the second half,” explained FC Tech coach Dan Prasol. “Once our energy dropped, they kind of ran away from us.”
Maralee Wiles put FC Tech (7-7, 6-6) up 1-0 in the first half before Hampden Charter (10-1-2, 9-0-2) tied the game, 1-1, into halftime.
Trailing 2-1, Adams scored with an assist from Olivia Whittier to make it a 2-2 game. But Catrena Mareno and Jenna Rhull tallied late for the hosts for a 4-2 victory.
Tabi Hamilton made eight saves in the loss for the Eagles, which host Pathfinder Regional Vocational Technical High School today at 4.
Frontier 2, Easthampton 0 — Natalie Denkiewicz followed up Monday’s four-goal performance with two more tallies Tuesday to lead Frontier Regional School to its second win in as many days with a 2-0 victory over Easthampton High School in a Pioneer North girls’ soccer game in Easthampton.
Denkiewicz opened the scoring in the 37th minute on an assist from Cambrie Hamilton. She made it 2-0 two minutes into the second half on an assist from Angela Self. She has now scored six goals in two days and has 20 goals on the year.
“It seems like she does it with ease, too,” Frontier coach Phil Pittelli said. “I just don’t want us to become too reliant on her.”
Lexa Boyden turned aside two shots to pick up the victory. Lily Pioli made eight saves in the loss.
Frontier travels to Huntington Friday evening at 6 to face Gateway Regional High School.
Hopkins 2, Athol 1 — Juliette Cook scored with 10 minutes to play and Hopkins Academy dealt Athol High School a major blow in its postseason hopes with a 2-1 victory in Pioneer North girls’ soccer action Tuesday in Hadley.
Athol (6-8-1) must earn five points in its final three games (two wins and a tie) in order to qualify for the WMass Division III Tournament.
The Red Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute when Ally Raymond scored an unassisted goal but the lead was short-lived as Samantha Jenks scored four minutes later to knot things up.
Cook’s goal came late in the second half and despite the loss, Athol coach Tim Cleveland said he was pleased with his team’s effort.
“We finally showed up and played an 80-minute game, which was refreshing for a change,” he said. “Now, we have to have two wins and a tie in our next three games, which is going to be tough.”
Gabby Palmisano made five saves to earn the win. Peyton Parker had six saves in the loss.
FC Tech 3, St. Mary’s 3 — A furious second-half comeback saw Franklin County Technical School erase a two-goal deficit and the host Eagles settled for a 3-3 draw with St. Mary’s Parish School in a Tri-County League boys’ soccer game Tuesday afternoon in Turners Falls.
FC Tech (7-5-3, 3-2-2) actually took a 1-0 lead in the game’s opening minute, when Jovanni Ruggiano scored from Rueben Galvez.
But St. Mary’s responded with three consecutive first-half goals, and took a 3-1 advantage into halftime.
Down but not out, the Eagles rallied in the second half. The hosts put 16 shots on goal after intermission, and Galvez struck for a pair of goals in the 60th and 75th minutes to salvage the 3-3 tie. Ruggiano assisted on both second-half strikes.
FC Tech travels to High School of Commerce on Thursday.
