Franklin County Technical School got a taste of perfection Tuesday.
Mike McGoldrick’s 41 in the No. 2 spot earned him medalist honors, and visiting Franklin Tech finished off an unbeaten regular season with a 20½-3½ win over Mohawk Trail Regional High School in the Bi-County West golf finale Tuesday at Edge Hill Golf Course in Shelburne Falls.
The victory wrapped up a perfect 14-0 season for the Eagles, who finished 4-13 one year ago.
“I think the reason we went 14-0 was because of the depth on this team,” Franklin Tech coach Sean Knightly explained. “We were fortunate to have three returning seniors, who were outstanding all four years, and a returning junior in Mike Patnode. We were also lucky enough to pick up three new golfers and they not only contributed, they continued to improve all season.”
McGoldrick, one of the three newbies, won all four points for the Eagles (14-0, 12-0), while Hunter Sessions and Travis Cutting, two senior holdovers, posted rounds of 45 to help aid the cause. Patnode (46) and newcomer Nate Pelletier (48) also broke 50 in the win.
“We have six guys averaging in the 40s, which is remarkable,” Knightly said. “Last year I put forth a challenge that if they wanted to improve, they had to put in the effort. They accepted that challenge. They were joining courses over the summer and taking lessons. The challenge all the coaches put in is that we only have about a month and a half with our team, and half that time is for matches. That means the kids have to put in the time in the offseason.”
Mohawk (7-7, 6-5) was paced by a low round of 53 from Andy Robertson at No. 2. Ben Thompson captured three points in his match at No. 6.
Franklin Tech and Mohawk will both take part in the WMass Division III Tournament Monday at The Orchards in South Hadley.
Chicopee 21½, Frontier 2½ — It was a day of firsts for the majority of the Frontier Regional School golf team Tuesday.
The visiting Red Hawks posted a starting lineup with four players making their varsity debuts, and host Chicopee High School picked up a 21½-2½ independent victory at Chicopee Country Club.
Collin Boudreau captured the low round of the day for Frontier (10-6), firing a 59 in the No. 2 spot. Alex Gochinski shot 62 and won a point at No. 6, while Jared Abt shot 64 to earn a point at No. 4. Gabe Gochinski’s 67 was worth ½ point at No. 3.
“We were able to get everyone in a match this year so I think that’s a great thing,” said Frontier coach Bill Fitzpatrick, whose team won the Suburban West regular season title. “We had a great season and we’re looking forward to the (Western Mass. Division II Tournament).”
Turners 12, Greenfield 12 — The match at No. 1 saw the two low scores of the day, as Greenfield High School’s Ryan Cote and Kyle Kucenski of Turners Falls High School shared match medalist honors with rounds of 46 to help their respective teams to a 12-12 tie in Bi-County East golf action Tuesday at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls.
Cote won 2½ points in the match, while teammates Gabe Larouche (49) and Nate Provost (62) combined for seven points on the afternoon for the Green Wave.
Tyler Noyes and Brian Poirier both shot 50 for Turners Falls, combining for six points, while teammate Joey Mosca (60) won 3½ points at No. 4.
Amherst 2, FC Tech 0 — Lindsey Campbell and Rachel Kawall scored first-half goals, and visiting Amherst Regional High School held on from there to capture a 2-0 victory over host Franklin County Technical School in a Tri-County League field hockey game Tuesday in Turners Falls.
Amherst held a slight 15-13 edge in shots on goal, with goalkeeper Lydia Sullivan making 13 saves to pick up the shutout. The Hurricanes totaled seven penalty corners to five for the Eagles.
FC Tech (1-8-3, 1-3-1) was paced by its goalkeeper, as Kailynn Mason-Emond also made 13 saves on the afternoon.
The Eagles are off until next week when they host Mahar Regional School on Oct. 25.
Southwick 2, Mahar 0 — Sydney Gorman had a goal and an assist Tuesday and Southwick-Tolland Regional High School defeated Mahar Regional School, 2-0, in a Bi-County League field hockey game in Southwick.
The loss dropped Mahar (5-6-1) one game below .500 on the season as the Senators try to stay at or above the mark to qualify for the WMass Division II Tournament.
Gorman scored 3 minutes, 37 seconds into the contest on an assist from Caroline Wilcox to stake the Rams (9-3-0) to a 1-0 lead. Gorman then helped push the lead to 2-0 when she set up Emily Martin for a goal with 13:37 to play in the first half.
Neither team found the back of the net in the second half. Clare Stratton finished with seven saves to earn the clean sheet. Hannah Birch made 11 saves in the loss.
Frontier 3, Ludlow 0 — Lauren Davenport had five kills, two aces and three digs and Frontier Regional School defeated Ludlow High School, 25-8, 25-17, 25-18, in an independent girls’ volleyball match Tuesday in Ludlow.
Ashley Telega had six kills in the win, and Olivia Deane finished with three kills and four digs. Selayna Bathurst added three kills and two aces, Ella Deane had eight assists and one ace, and Jalen Sullivan had five kills and three aces.
South Hadley 3, Mahar 2 — Maeve Powell put down 13 kills and recorded three solo blocks, but host Mahar Regional School dropped a wild five-set match to South Hadley High School in an independent girls’ volleyball match Tuesday night in Orange. The visiting Tigers captured a 25-15, 25-16, 21-25, 20-25, 15-12 victory.
Sophia Smith tossed in a pair of kills to go with eight digs for Mahar (13-6), while Jordyn Berry and Carissa Johnson each registered a kill. Johnson and Aria Flematti had three aces apiece, while Flematti recorded 16 assists out of the setter position.
Lauren Henne posted a huge defensive night to help the Senators, as she managed 20 digs. Powell added nine digs.
