Olivia Vecellio scored a pair of goals and assisted on another, and Frontier Regional School amped up its offense after a scoreless first half to capture a 4-0 shutout of Smith Academy in a Valley League field hockey game Monday afternoon in South Deerfield.
Smith Academy didn’t record a shot on goal, but the visiting Falcons held Frontier (11-2-1, 7-0-0) scoreless into halftime.
“We were hitting a lot of shots right at goal in the first half,” admitted Frontier coach Missy Mahar. “We weren’t finishing the way we should have been.”
The second half was much more like it for the Hawks, as Vecellio scored twice and McKenzie Patterson also buried a pair of goals. Vecellio and Kathryn Mason notched assists in the win.
“We started to capitalize and finish off all those opportunities,” Mahar said of the second half.
Frontier held a 26-0 advantage in shots on goal, while Smith Academy had a slight 5-4 edge in penalty corners.
The Red Hawks are off until Thursday night, when they host South Hadley High School at 6:30 p.m.
Athol 1, Murdock 0 — Hudson Carlson scored on an assist from Lauren Mack in the second half to lift Athol High School to a 1-0 win over Murdock High School in an independent game Monday in Winchendon.
The game was scoreless at halftime but Carlson struck for the lone goal of the contest near the midpoint of the second half. Athol won despite missing four starters.
Ryley Pond stopped all eight shots she faced to earn the shutout.
Ashley Sigda made three saves in the loss.
Turners 3, Belchertown 0 — Sienna Dillensneider finished with 20 assists, six aces and three digs Monday and Turners Falls High School rolled to a 25-17, 25-17, 25-16 win over Belchertown High School in an independent girls’ volleyball match in Turners Falls.
Chloe Ellis finished with eight kills, four aces and two blocked shot for Turners Falls (14-1), and Dabney Rollins had five kills and one block. Abby Loynd chipped in with four kills and five aces.
Athol 3, Sabis 2 — A huge outing from setter Julia Ramos led the way for Athol High School, which shook off a 2-1 deficit, won a wild fourth set and finished the deal with a fifth set victory en route to a 25-17, 15-25, 18-25, 30-28, 15-9 win over Sabis International Charter School in an independent contest Monday night in Springfield.
Ramos had 10 kills, 14 aces, 13 assists and three digs for Athol, which moved above the .500 mark to 8-7 overall.
Hannah Lajoie tossed in nine kills, while Abbe Roberts added five kills, two digs and an ace in the victory.
Chicopee 3, Greenfield 0 — Host Chicopee High School received a match-high 12 kills from Ayesha Miller, and the Pacers rolled to a 25-10, 25-11, 25-14 sweep of Greenfield High School in an independent girls’ volleyball contest Monday in Chicopee.
Casey Noyes paced Greenfield (1-11) with 12 digs to go with two kills and two aces, while Jen Ortega posted three kills, six digs and an ace. Heather Catlin also contributed two kills and two aces for the Green Wave.
Greenfield travels to play Sabis International Charter School on Wednesday night.
Central 3, FC Tech 0 — A dominant Springfield Central High School volleyball team showed why it has 15 wins under its belt this season on Monday. The visiting Golden Eagles swept Franklin County Technical School, 25-6, 25-14, 25-9 in an independent match played in Turners Falls.
Jocelyn Holloway put down three kills to go with three digs and a block for FC Tech (7-8), while Summer Gadreau recorded three blocks, two digs and an ace.
The defense was paced by Reagan Fiske and Leah Wozniak, which had three digs apiece in the loss.
The Eagles take to the road Wednesday when they travel to Holyoke High School for another independent match.
FC Tech 22, Westfield Tech 2 — Nate Pelletier shot 39 to snag match medalist honors, and Franklin County Technical School clinched the outright Bi-County West regular-season title thanks to a convincing 22-2 win over Westfield Technical Academy Monday in a golf match played at East Mountain Country Club in Westfield.
Pelletier’s 39 won him all four points in his match at No. 4, as the Eagles (13-0, 10-0) had all six of their golfers shoot 46 or better.
Mike McGoldrick shot 42 to earn four points at No. 2, while Mike Patnode and Travis Cutting both shot 43. Tyler Raymond had a solid outing in the No. 6 spot, shooting 45, while Hunter Sessions shot 46 at No. 1.
Smith Academy 14, Greenfield 10 — Ryan Cote shared match medalist honors with a round of 39, but Greenfield High School was unable to pull off the upset Monday afternoon as Smith Academy slid past the Green Wave, 14-10, in a Bi-County East golf match at the Country Club of Greenfield.
Cote won 3½ points in the No. 1 spot against Smith Academy’s Daniel Cavanaugh. Greenfield teammate Jake Cote shot 43 at No. 3, capturing 1½ points.
Connor Pedigree won four points at No. 6 thanks to a 51 for Greenfield (4-9, 3-8), while Gabe Larouche shot 49 at No. 2 on the afternoon.
