TURNERS FALLS — The Gill-Montague School District’s Logo/Nickname Task Force has been finalized, and will begin meeting on Oct. 24.

The list includes four alumni, five community members, one staff member and one student.

At Tuesday night’s School Committee meeting, the group voted to finalize the task force with the exception of possibly adding more students and staff from the high school.

Superintendent Michael Sullivan said he was visiting the Student Council this week to talk to more students about the task force.

The members approved include TFHS alumni Chad Cadran, Alana Martineau, Michael Mackin, Betsy Laczynski, all of Montague; community members Richard Sawicki of Erving, Tupper Brown of Gill, Elyssa Serrilli of Montague and Nancy Perry of Montague; district employees Thomasina Hall and Christine K. Bates and student Korey Martineau.

While there were more volunteers in certain categories, the board approved the entire list of 10 because it still amounted to a smaller task force than what it initially expected. The committee was looking at originally up to 19 members on the task force.

“When you have a volunteer willing, take them,” Montague representative Christina Postera said.

The board voted to approve the list and then continue calling for students to volunteer.

“It was great to have that much interest from various people,” Jane Oakes said.

Sullivan said high school Principal Annie Leonard told him it was difficult for students to make this commitment without knowing how frequent the meetings will be and when they will take place.

The committee also discussed when the task force would meet and how it would work out organizational issues like meeting notices, agenda, minutes and open meeting law compliance.

Several board members suggested a joint School Committee and Task Force meeting where they could coordinate and explain certain procedures.

“The sooner we can get things rolling, the better. We just need to make sure we do things right,” said Martineau, who was in the audience at Tuesday night’s meeting.

She suggested that the initial group approved should meet as soon as it can, and add student volunteers as they express interest.

The group will meet Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. before the School Committee meeting.
