Kyle Kucenski led the way for the Turners Falls High School golf team, carding a team-low round of 42 in the No. 1 spot, but the Powertown dropped a 21-3 decision to undefeated Smith Academy in a Bi-County East golf match Thursday at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls.

Kucenski won all three points for his team, edging Smith Academy’s Chris Darragh in the top match after the latter show a 44.

Tyler Noyes shot 51 for the Powertown (0-12, 0-10) in the No. 3 spot, while Joey Mosca carded a 55 in the No. 4 spot. Brian Poirier (60) and Joe Kochan (71) rounded out the starters for Turners.

Daniel Cavanaugh was match medalist with a round of 39 at No. 2 for Smith Academy (10-0, 9-0).

Turners travels to St. Mary’s Parish School on Tuesday.

Mohawk 20½, Westfield Tech 3½ — Andy Robertson continued his strong play, earning medalist honors with a round of 45 to lift Mohawk Trail Regional High School to a 20½-3½ victory over Westfield Technical Academy in a Bi-County West golf match Thursday at Edge Hill Golf Course in Shelburne Falls.

Robertson swept all four points in his match at No. 3 for Mohawk (7-5, 6-3), while Triston LaCross was close behind with a 47 at No. 2 to also capture four points.

Will Guyette shot 53 in the No. 1 spot to capture 3½ points, while Anthony Moffatt shot 57 at No. 5 to capture four points. Ben Thompson added four points at No. 6 with a 58.

Girls’ volleyball

Athol 3, Greenfield 0 — Hannah Lajoie put down six kills and Julia Ramos contributed nine assists to power Athol High School to a 25-12, 26-24, 25-20 sweep of Greenfield High School in a Northern girls’ volleyball match Thursday in Greenfield.

Ramos added three kills and two aces for Athol (6-6, 2-4), which climbed back to the .500 mark with the victory. Paige Truehart added three kills and an ace, while Alexis Carrasquillo had four kills and three aces.

Casey Noyes played well for Greenfield (1-8, 1-5), recording four kills, five aces and 13 digs. Caitlyn Moore added four digs and seven assists, while Hannah Mailloux (four kills, two digs), Lexxie Rowell (three aces, eight assists) and Ravin Grave (three aces, two kills, three digs) all contributed for the Wave.

Mohawk 3, Mahar 1 — In a battle of teams jockeying for second place in the Northern Division, Mohawk Trail Regional High School picked up arguably its biggest win of the season Thursday night.

The host Warriors held serve at home, rallying from an early deficit to defeat Mahar Regional School, 20-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-11, in a Northern girls’ volleyball match in Buckland.

“We had a slow start but with each set the girls became more and more intense,” offered Mohawk coach Katelyn Gaffigan Gamelli.

Lexi Mazza had another big night, posting a match-high 18 kills to go with five blocks, nine digs, five aces and two assists. Gabby Shean added four kills and two digs, while Kylie Lowell notched six aces, three kills and a block.

Ashley Reynolds dished out 18 assists along with three kills, two aces and five digs for Mohawk (6-4, 3-1). Julia Massey registered two aces and two kills while Kayla Martin had five digs and two aces. Erykka Henry added three digs.

Maeve Powell led Mahar (9-3, 3-2) with 12 kills, three aces, three blocks and six digs. Jordyn Berry had four kills, while Aria Flematti recorded 16 assists to go with two aces and six digs. Carissa Johnson had a team-high nine digs, while Lauren Henne added eight digs. Ava Santana chipped in two kills.

The Senators posted a stellar hitting percentage of .350 in the opening set to capture the win, but Mohawk rebounded and got better as the night went along.

Field hockey

Frontier 2, Northampton 0 — A pair of second-half goals propelled Frontier Regional School to a 2-0 win over Northampton High School in an independent field hockey game Thursday in South Deerfield.

The game was scoreless at halftime but it took McKenzie Patterson just 2 minutes, 17 seconds to find the back of the net in the second half when she finished off a feed from Olivia Vecellio. The score remained that way until Kimmie Asseng scored with 10:29 to play on an assist from Patterson.

“I think we started connecting on our passes better in the second half,” Frontier coach Missy Phillips said. “That helped us create better offensive chances.”

Skyler Burniske made one save to record the shutout. Dani Parent made 14 saves in the loss.

Southwick 3, Athol 1 — Kyla Rathburn scored a goal in the first half, but Athol High School was unable to knock off host Southwick-Tolland Regional High School Thursday afternoon.

The host Rams added an insurance goal in the second half to capture a 3-1 win in an independent field hockey game in Southwick.

Rathburn scored off an assist from Chase Michaud for the Red Raiders (1-7-3), which put seven shots on goal against a solid Southwick squad.

Emily Martin, Sydney Gorman and Emma Barnard tallied for the Rams (7-3).

Athol goalkeeper Ryley Pond recorded 21 saves in a busy outing between the pipes.

Athol travels to Franklin County Technical School today for a key Tri-County League contest.
