Despite a combined 25 kills by Lauren Davenport and Selayna Bathurst, visiting Frontier Regional School suffered its first girls’ volleyball loss of the season Thursday night to a powerhouse school from the other side of the state.
The Red Hawks traveled to play defending MIAA State Division II runner-up Notre Dame Academy, and returned home to western Mass. with a 25-20, 25-15, 25-22 loss in an independent match in Hingham.
Davenport had 13 kills and eight digs for Frontier (5-1), while Bathurst totaled 12 kills and a team-high 16 digs.
Setter Ella Deane finished with 21 assists, two aces and seven digs, while Ashley Telega totaled three kills and two blocks. Bri Thurber registered six digs, while Sarah Joly added three digs.
The difficult independent slate continues for Frontier on Saturday, when the Hawks host Div. II Melrose High School in South Deerfield at 3 p.m. Melrose won 18 matches a year ago.
Turners 1, Amherst 0 — Cassidhe Wozniak scored with less than five minutes to play and Turners Falls High School defeated Amherst Regional High School, 1-0, in an independent field hockey game Thursday in Amherst.
Amber Taylor set up Wozniak for the game’s lone tally, helping Turners (4-2-0) rebound from a lopsided loss to Mohawk earlier in the week.
“Today was a better game,” Turners coach Becky Dame said. “I still don’t think it was our best, but we definitely did better.”
Turners Falls also got senior captain Sam Kolodziej back from an injury and she helped anchor the defense in the shutout. Haleigh Greene had a strong game in net, turning aside 15 shots to pitch the shutout.
Mahar 2, Athol 0 — Anna Wetherbee scored 3 minutes, 37 seconds into the game and Mahar Regional School went on to defeat Athol High School, 2-0, in an independent field hockey game Thursday in Athol.Hannah Dupont set up Wetherbee for the game’s first goal and the score remained that way until late in the second half, when Aileen Fitzgerald scored with 8:49 to play on an assist from Lilly Fellows to get an insurance goal for the Senators.
Hannah Birch made three saves in the Mahar (4-3-0) net to earn her second shutout in as many days, and fourth of the season. Ryley Pond turned aside 11 shots in a solid effort in the loss.
FC Tech 21½, Pathfinder 2½ — Nate Pelletier paced four golfers with sub-50 rounds for Franklin County Technical School, and the Eagles rolled to a 21½-2½ victory over Pathfinder Regional Vocational Technical High School in a Bi-County West golf match Thursday at Quaboag Valley Golf Course in Monson.
Pelletier shot 46 out of the No. 4 spot to earn all four points for the Eagles (4-0, 3-0). Travis Cutting won three points at No. 1 with a round of 49, while Hunter Sessions scored 3½ points at No. 2 (49) and Mike McGoldrick scored four points at No. 4 (49).
Tech hosts Springfield Central High School today at 3.
McCann Tech 12½, Mohawk 11½ — Andy Robertson earned match medalist honors with a 44 at No. 3, but host Mohawk Trail Regional High School fell just shy in a tight 12½-11½ defeat at the hands of McCann Technical School Thursday at Edge Hill Golf Course in Shelburne Falls.
Robertson won all four points in his match against Matt Jette for Mohawk (2-4, 2-2). Tristan Keyser-Parker also swept four points at No. 4 after a round of 51, while Will Guyette won two points at No. 2 on the strength of a 48. Triston LaCross shot 46 at No. 1, scoring 1½ points for the Warriors.
