Vintage golfer Bill Wardwell, a longtime member at the Country Club of Greenfield, shot the Hickory course record Wednesday by firing a 73 from the white tees.
The record is based on Wardwell using hickory-shafted clubs, representative of the era in which those clubs were played. Wardwell is a renowned hickory golfer, with a few nationally recognized championship titles to his name. He is a founding member of the Hickory Golfers of Massachusetts, as well as a member of the Society of Hickory Golfers.
Timmons League
Rick Stempel and Norm LaCoy teamed for a low gross of even-par 36 to pace the Timmons League Wednesday at Northfield Golf Course.
Bob Messer and Matt Deane were the low-net winners at 26, while Pat Varner was the match medalist (37) followed by Stempel (38) and Deane (38).
Steve Lanciani was closest to the pin on No. 6 (4 feet, 2 inches). Frank Penny was closest on No. 7 (7-5).
CFC two-player scramble
Jay Corbett and Chris Chappell captured first place with a 64 to pace the field at the Crumpin Fox Club two-player scramble Wednesday in Bernardston.
Doug Taylor and Gene Cetto won the tiebreaker to finish as runners-up with a 66, while the teams of Phil Phillips and John Shea and Robert Gonyar and Jeff Murray settled for a tie for third place at 66.
Deerfield Academy scores
Deerfield Academy made a successful trip to Pomfret School Wednesday, as the field hockey team breezed to a 6-0 road victory.
In other action, the varsity volleyball team swept Worcester Academy, 3-0, while the girls’ varsity soccer team tied Westminster, 2-2.
The boys’ soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Suffield Academy, while the boys’ water polo team was edged by Loomis, 15-14.
Four Rivers x-country
Matt Sloan-Anderson captured first overall with a time of 17 minutes, 33 seconds to pace the Four Rivers Charter School boys’ cross-country team to a third-place finish in a meet Wednesday at the Dublin School.
Host Dublin won with 39 points, followed by BART (46 points) and Four Rivers (70).
Eli Smith was fourth overall in 19:22, followed by Casey Davey (sixth, 19:38), Dylan Dubay (24th, 23:13) and Joshua Lavigne (25th, 29:10).
Mahar golf tourney
The Mahar Regional School boosters will hold their annual golf tournament to support Mahar athletics Oct. 1 at Ellinwood Golf Club in Athol at 10 a.m.
Cost of the tournament is $60 for members and $80 for non-members. The event will have prizes and a catered dinner afterward. The tournament is still accepting foursomes and sponsors. For more information, contact Chad Softic at csoftic@rcmahar.org.
