Cassidhe Wozniak poured in four goals, including three in the second half, as host Turners Falls High School captured a 5-0 win over Mahar Regional School in a Bi-County League field hockey contest Friday in Turners Falls.
Amber Taylor added a first-half goal for the Powertown (3-1, 1-0), which led 2-0 at halftime before Wozniak exploded for three of her four tallies after intermission. Aly Murphy added an assist in the win.
Haleigh Greene recorded 10 saves to pick up the shutout for Turners, while Hannah Birch made 11 saves in net for Mahar (2-3, 0-2). The visiting Senators held a 19-5 edge in penalty corners, but couldn’t poke a goal past Greene.
Greenfield 6, Westfield 0 — Raegan Hickey buried four more goals, and Greenfield High School kept right on rolling Friday with a 6-0 victory over Westfield High School in a Valley League field hockey game in Westfield.
Olivia Joy and Audrey Bresciano also tallied in the win for the Green Wave (3-0, 1-0), which won their Valley League opener after a pair of independent victories kicked off the fall.
Greenfield, which led 5-0 at halftime, held a 23-3 edge in shots on goal and a 6-1 edge in penalty corners. Bresciano notched four assists to go with her goal, while Hickey also registered a helper.
Goalkeeper Lizzy Howland recorded three saves to snag the team’s first shutout of the year.
Greenfield hosts East Longmeadow High School Monday night at 7.
Frontier 1, Agawam 1 — Lily Spencer’s goal with just 26 seconds left in the first half tied the game after an early deficit, and host Frontier Regional School wound up tying Agawam High School, 1-1, in an independent field hockey game Friday in South Deerfield.
Spencer scored an unassisted goal off a rebound to tie the score at 1-1 after Agawam took a 1-0 lead eight minutes in when Eliza Timms tallied.
The teams played a scoreless second half, despite Frontier holding a 14-7 edge in penalty corners, and a 14-9 advantage in shots on goal.
“I thought we played well, especially in the second half,” began Frontier coach Missy Mahar. “At one point, we had three players off (the field) due to pushing calls, but we stayed composed. It was a hard-fought tie, so we’ll take it.”
Skyla Burniske stopped eight shots in net for Frontier (2-1-1), which travels to Westfield on Monday.
Mohawk 5, Amherst 0 — Mikayla Bompastore, Shelby Sinistore and Maya Lesieur each tallied a goal and an assist as Mohawk Trail Regional High School rolled to a 5-0 win over Amherst Regional High School in an independent field hockey match Friday afternoon in Buckland.
Lizzie Herzig opened up the scoring for the Warriors with 18 minutes, 44 seconds remaining in the first half on a pass from Shelby Sinistore. Mohawk added two more first-half goals on scores from Sinistore and Bompastore, giving the Warriors the 3-0 halftime lead.
Taylor Williams and Lesieur each scored second-half goals in support of Mohawk goalie Emma French, who earned the shutout with one save.
Lydia Sullivan was busy in net for Amherst, stopping 27 shots in the loss.
Mohawk is back in action on Monday at home against Turners Falls.
Mahar 4, Sci-Tech 0 — James Temple and Riley Drew each had a goal and an assist on Friday as Mahar Regional School defeated Springfield School of Science & Technology, 4-0, in a McGrath League boys’ soccer game in Springfield.
The Senators (3-1-0) scored twice in each half to get past the CyberCats (2-2-0) and move to a perfect 3-0 in the McGrath. Damien Harris and Jack Temple each added one goal in the win.
Alex Gurganus stopped all seven shots he faced to notch the shutout. Wilmer Lopez stopped three shots in the loss.
Frontier 1, Chicopee 0 — Doug Hanieski found Ethan LaFleur making a diagonal run, and LaFleur tucked in the game-winning goal with just five minutes remaining to lift Frontier to a 1-0 victory over Chicopee High School in a Moriarty Division boys’ soccer game Friday in South Deerfield.
The win puts Frontier at 2-0-2 on the season, and the team improved to a perfect 2-0 in the Division I-filled Moriarty.
“I’m proud of how the team has come out to start the year,” said Frontier coach Dale Totman. “I thought we’d do great (in the Moriarty) but you never know. We try not to talk about playing these bigger schools. We don’t care who it is, we just want to play our best game.”
Frontier held a 16-13 edge in shots in the victory, with goalkeeper Peter Bronke recording eight saves for the shutout.
The Red Hawks travel to Drury High School Monday.
Four Rivers 4, Dublin 0 — Evan Leaf scored two first-half goals to lead Four Rivers Charter School to its first win of the season with a 4-0 win over the Dublin School in a River Valley Athletic League boys’ soccer match Friday in Greenfield.
Avani Rivard and Milou Riggouloud each scored goals for the Otters in support of winning goalkeeper Josh Gibson (five saves), while Max Schnoor and Tim Stewart each played well on defense.
Four Rivers returns to the field Tuesday afternoon against the Berkshire Arts and Technology Charter School in Greenfield.
Mohawk 3, Greenfield 0, — Mae Rice-Lesure, Grace Poplawski and Lilly Seaver all scored goals for Mohawk as the Warriors defeated Greenfield High School, 3-0, in a Pioneer South girls’ soccer match Friday night in Buckland.
The Warriors used halftime adjustments to score two second-half goals to improve to 2-1-0 on the young season.
“We played a pretty good game overall,” said Mohawk coach Steve Tomi. “Greenfield played well tonight but we made a few adjustments at halftime and I was very pleased with the way we responded in the second half.”
Lily Wickland Shearer registered two assists for Mohawk in support of Seaver, who stopped two shots in net before moving to forward for the second half. Dina Samake played well in net for the Green Wave stopping 19 shots to keep the score close.
Mahar 2, Amherst 2 — Hannah Keochakian netted a goal with 6:30 remaining in the game to help Amherst secure a 2-2 tie with Mahar in an independent girls’ soccer match Friday in Amherst.
The Senators controlled much of the game before Keochakian broke free for the unassisted goal to earn the tie.
“We are playing good soccer and I am really excited about our future if we continue to clean up some of the mistakes.” said Mahar head coach Chad Softic.
Delaney Parker opened the scoring for Mahar 5:30 into the first half on a pass from Mollie Burke for the early 1-0 lead. Amherst battled back with a goal right before the end of the first half on a score from Jasmine McMickle to knot the score at 1-1.
Micalyn Mailloux gave the Senators the lead in the second half on a pass from Parker. Elysha Bedard finished with 10 saves in net for Mahar, while Reilly Lepak also stopped 10 shots for Amherst.
Turners 3, Agawam 1 — Sienna Dillensneider registered 14 assists, two kills, three aces and six digs as Turners Falls improved to 4-0 with a 25-16, 18-25, 25-23, 25-19 win over Agawam in an independent girls’ volleyball match Friday in Agawam.
Chloe Ellis also played well for Turners Falls recording eight kills, two aces and three digs, while Emma Miner chipped in with four assists, one kill, two aces and three digs.
Sarah Waldron also filled the stat sheet for Turners Falls with two kills, two digs and an ace.
Turners Falls returns to action Monday at home against Mahar.
Mahar 3, Pioneer 0 — Ava Santana had six kills and Mahar defeated Pioneer, 25-7, 25-14, 25-22, in a Northern Division girls’ volleyball match Friday evening in Orange.
Sophia Smith finished with four kills and a team-high six aces. Aria Flematti had two kills, five aces and nine assists for the Senators (4-1, 2-0), while Jordyn Berry added four kills and three aces.
Autumn Flagg had five digs, three kills and two aces for the Panthers (1-4, 1-2), while Jacquilene Collins had six digs and an ace.
Hampshire 17, Mohawk 7 — Garrett Antesz fired a 40 and took 3½ points to help Hampshire Regional High School earn a 17-7 win over Mohawkl in an independent golf match Friday at Edge Hill Golf Course in Buckland.
Tristan LaCross played well for the Warriors against Antesz, carding a 43, while Ben Thompson took 2½ points in the No. 6 spot with a 59. Also playing well for Mohawk was Will Guyette who split his match in the No. 2 spot with a 46.
FC Tech 17, St. Mary’s 7 — Mike Patnode swept four points and took low team honors firing a 44 as Franklin County Techncial School downed St. Mary’s Parish School, 17-7, in an independent golf match Friday at Tekoa Country Club in Westfield.
Mike McGoldrick (45) and Jordan DiGeorge (59) each took four points for the Eagles, while Nate Pelletier shot 52 to tally three points.
