Visiting Smith Academy had two players shoot sub-40 rounds, propelling the Falcons to a convincing 19-5 victory over Greenfield High School in a Bi-County East golf match Thursday at the Country Club of Greenfield.
Chris Darragh was the medalist for Smith (3-0, 2-0 East), firing a 37 out of the No. 2 slot. Teammate Dan Cavanaugh shot 38 at No. 1, and both players swept all four points in their matches.
Greenfield (0-3, 0-3) was led by the play of Gabe Larouche, who carded a 39 to capture three points in his match at No. 4. Ryan Cote won 1½ points at No. 3 thanks to a round of 45, while Hunter Roberts also shot 45 at No. 2 for the Wave.
Greenfield returns to action Tuesday when it welcomes Easthampton High School to CCG.
Ware 22, Turners 2 — Kyle Kucenski posted the low round of the day for visiting Turners Falls High School, firing a 45, but the Powertown dropped a 22-2 decision to Ware High School in a Bi-County East golf match Thursday afternoon.
Turners, which forfeited the match at No. 6, received one point each from Brian Poirier at No. 2 (62) and Tyler Noyes at No. 3 (56).
Mohawk 13, Pathfinder 11 — Will Guyette, Tristan Keysert-Parker and Ben Thompson scored three points apiece, and visiting Mohawk Trail Regional High School edged Pathfinder Regional Vocational Technical High School, 13-11, in Bi-County West action Thursday at Quaboag Country Club in Monson.
Guyette shot 54 in the No. 2 spot for the Warriors, while Keysert-Parker carded a 68 at No. 5 and Thompson shot 65 at No. 6. Anthony Moffatt won two points at No. 4 after a round of 59.
The win was the first of the season for Mohawk, which improved to 1-1 on the year.
Mahar 13½, Northampton 10½ — Corey Sanderson captured match medalist honors after shooting a 44, lifting Mahar Regional School to a 13½-10½ victory over Northampton High School in an independent golf match Thursday at Ellinwood Country Club in Athol.
Sanderson won three of the four points at No. 1 to beat Northampton’s Aidan Chapdelaine (49). Tucker Ninteau won 3½ points in the No. 3 spot after shooting a 51, while Brandon Green swept all four points at No. 4 behind a round of 49.
Mohawk 3, Greenfield 0 — Lexi Mazza racked up 13 kills, and Mohawk Trail Regional High School swept visiting Greenfield High School, 27-25, 25-14, 25-16, in a Northern Division girls’ volleyball match Thursday in Buckland.
Mazza added three aces and a block for the Warriors (2-2, 1-0), while Kayla Martin notched four kills in the victory. Julia Massey had five aces and a kill, and Gabby Shean tossed in two aces while Hayley Cunningham and Kylie Lowell each had an ace and a kill.
Greenfield (0-3, 0-2) was paced by Casey Noyes’ seven digs and an ace. Teammate Jen Ortega had two kills, two aces and three digs, while Ravin Graves contributed a kill and an ace.
Frontier 3, Minnechaug 2 — While its backs against the wall, Frontier Regional School delivered in dramatic fashion Thursday night.
Freshman Olivia Deane served the final six points with her team trailed 13-9, and the host Red Hawks captured what could potentially be a momentum-building early-season victory thanks to a 19-25, 26-28, 25-12, 25-22, 15-13 win over Minnechaug Regional High School in a PVIAC East volleyball match at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.
Frontier staged a pair of big comebacks in the win. Minnechaug (2-1, 0-1) captured the first two sets of the match, but Frontier battled back to win the next two and force a fifth and deciding game. Minnechaug then jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fifth set, but Deane’s late run helped the Red Hawks (4-0, 2-0) remain unbeaten.
“To come back from that in a short set is pretty remarkable,” Frontier coach Sean MacDonald said. “Each point is worth so much, and every mistake you make is huge. There’s not a lot of time to catch up.
“But Olivia has been serving so well in practice,” he continued. “I was thinking, ‘I’m going to at least have her serve.’ She missed a few in the fourth set, but I went back to her in the fifth because I was thinking, ‘She didn’t forget how to serve.’ She came through for us in the fifth set, big team. It was an entire team effort tonight.”
Hailey Orloski and Ashley Telega each had breakout performances at the net for Frontier. Orloski finished with 11 kills. Telega added 10. Two other Frontier players also finished in double figures. Lauren Davenport registered a team-high 13 kills, and Selayna Bathurst added 10.
Dean finished tied with older sister Ella Deane for the most aces on the team with four. Ella Deane added 40 assists and 17 digs, while Bathurst had 23 digs, and Davenport added 15 digs.
Frontier travels to Athol on Monday.
Palmer 2, Athol 0 — It was a step in the right direction for Athol High School, as the Red Raiders recorded their first shot on goal and first two penalty corners of the season in what was a 2-0 loss to Palmer High School in an independent field hockey game Thursday in Palmer.
Chase Michaud had the shot on goal for Athol (0-3), which received seven saves in net from goalkeeper Ryley Pond.
Palmer’s Ellie Serra and Zoe Przybycien scored goals in the victory. The Panthers had a 1-0 lead at halftime and tacked on an insurance tally in the second frame.
Athol returns home to host Holyoke High School in an independent game Monday.
