GREENFIELD — On Sunday afternoon firefighters extinguished a blaze at an abandoned slaughterhouse off South Shelburne Road in Greenfield.

Responders from Greenfield, Shelburne, Bernardston and Deerfield had to cut their way through thick woods with chainsaws to create an access road to reach the structure, which was about a quarter of a mile back from the road.

Greenfield Fire Department Captain Kyle Phelps said the firefighters then created a supply line of hose which was taken to the building by attaching it to the back of a four-wheel off-road utility vehicle. The call was received about 4:30 p.m. and the fire was out by 5:30 p.m.

Phelps said the building is a concrete structure with a wood roof, and the roof was the portion on fire.

Phelps said firefighters stationed at the Franklin County Fair spotted the fire and dispatched a truck from the station. He said that the department did call the State Fire Marshal’s office to investigate the cause because of the unusual circumstances.
