DEERFIELD — Deerfield Police are asking the public’s help in identifying the person who tried to break into a Greenfield Road farm stand cash box late Wednesday night and who later returned to the cash box with a crowbar. No money was taken, but the box was damaged, according to Deerfield Police Officer Adam Sokoloski.
The suspect was photographed by a security camera, and a Facebook posting by Deerfield Police has received 15,000 views in less than 24 hours, Sokoloski said.
“We’ve had some break-ins at farm stands, and the farm stands in Deerfield have made some improvements, including more secure cash boxes and cameras,” Sokoloski said. “Our officers on night shifts definitely pay attention to farm stands. Thieves are out to smash-and-grab a quick $50.”
With the opioid crisis, he said, farmers are wise to secure their cash boxes.
Sgt. Harry Ruddick is the investigating officer, and the public posting has given the police a few leads, Sokoloski said. The image is on the Deerfield Police Facebook site. Anyone with possible information is asked to call 413-665-2606.
