Greenfield High School will begin fall practices this week. Here are the starting times for the various sports.
• Football: Veterans Memorial Field House (grades 9-12), Friday at 4 p.m.
• Field hockey: Greenfield High School (grades 7-12), Aug. 24 at 9 a.m.
• Golf: Country Club of Greenfield (grades 8-12), Aug. 24 at noon
• Boys’ soccer: Greenfield High School (grades 9-12), Aug. 24 at 2:15 p.m.
• Girls’ volleyball: Nichols Gymnasium (grades 8-12), Aug. 24 at 9 a.m.
• Boys’ and girls’ cross-country: Greenfield High School (grades 8-12), Aug. 24 at 3 p.m.
• Cheerleading: Greenfield High School (grades 9-12), Aug. 24 at 3:30 p.m.
• Girls’ soccer: Greenfield High School (grades 9-12), Aug. 28 at 3 p.m.

All potential players must have a medical exam within 13 months of the first practice date on record with Frontier to be eligible to participate.

Turners Falls High School and Great Falls Middle Schools have announced the following opening dates and times for Fall 2017 sports:

• Middle school football: Aug. 25 (4 p.m.)
• Middle school soccer: First day of school (2:30 p.m.)
• Field hockey (JV & varsity): Aug. 24 (3:30-5:30 p.m.) and Aug. 25 (3:30-5:30 p.m.)
• Boys’ and girls’ cross country: Aug. 24 (6 p.m.) meet at Franklin Tech football field
• Varsity golf: Aug. 24 (1 p.m.) at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club
• Cheerleading: Aug. 31 (6-8 p.m.) at TFHS

Timmons League
George Northrup and Matt Deane captured low-gross honors Wednesday with a 37 at the Timmons League held at Northfield Golf Course.
Dan Campbell and Pat Varner were low-net winners with a 30, while John Hodgman and Kyle Matteson shared match medalist honors with 39s.
Rodney Ebbighausen was closest to the pin on No. 6 (9-10), while Pete Blake was closest on No. 7 (16-6).
CCG beats Wilbraham
Forbes Byron and Bob Barclay led the way with a 54, as the Country Club of Greenfield Morning Crew knocked off the Country Club of Wilbraham Silver Knights, 21-15, in action Wednesday at Country Club of Greenfield.
Steve Gibowicz and Rich Peel shot 57 to finish in second place for CCG, while John Johnson and Rich Krawiec were third with a 59.
CC of Wilbraham’s Ken Furst and Paul Dufresne paced their team with a 58.
Greenfield Elks League
The team of Greg Call and Bob Zaikowski closed out the regular season as the top tandem at the weekly Greenfield Elks Golf League on Wednesday at the Country Club of Greenfield.
Jim Elwell and Tom Willis finished as the second-place team in the league, while Dick Golosh and Sharon Rawson were third.
John Stacy was closest to the pin on No. 2 at 15 feet, 4 inches.
The top two teams will battle it out next week in a playoff for the league championship.
Deerfield rec registration
Registration will be held for players pre-K (ages 3 and 4) as well as grades K-6 for the Deerfield Recreation Soccer League on Aug. 29 and 31 from 5 to 6 p.m. at Deerfield Town Hall (8 Conway St. in South Deerfield).
The cost for the season is $50 for grades K through 6 and $40 for pre-K (cash or check accepted). Players will receive a soccer shirt at registration. Please bring old cleats and shin guards to exchange or donate.
The league will hold a skills assessment on Sept. 5 for grades 3 and 4 (5:30 p.m.) and grades 5 and 6 (6:30 p.m.) at Memorial Field behind Town Hall. This is also the last day to register to play. For more information, contact Sue Antonellis at suea@town.deerfield.ma.us
Deerfield rec seeks coach
The Deerfield Recreation Department is looking for a field hockey coach. The instructional program is for children in Union 38 in grades 3-6. Instruction includes drills and skills with no games. WMass 18U tryouts
The Western Massachusets Warriors 18U travel softball team will hold tryouts on Aug. 21 at the Bourdeau Fields Complex at Turners Falls High School from 6 to 8 p.m.
The team is being coached by former Turners Falls player Jenna Putala. The team will play in tournaments and college recruiting showcases next summer and is open to players from any town. Players must be 19 or under on Feb. 1, 2018. If possible, players should bring birth certificates to tryouts.

The Valley Storm fast-pitch softball team will hold tryouts for three teams.
• The 12-and-under tryouts are scheduled on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Merritt Field in Sunderland.

Don Maynard Race
The 23rd annual Don Maynard 5-Mile Road Race and 3-Mile Walk is scheduled for Sept. 16 at the Green River Swimming & Recreation Area.
The race is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. start, and runners/walkers can register online at www.runreg.com or go to the Maynard website (www.dmmrace.com).
