A trio of Country Club of Greenfield members all finished inside the top 30 at the Senior Hornblower Memorial Tournament held Monday and Tuesday at Plymouth Country Club in Plymouth.
Don Foberg paced the contingent in one of the most prestigious amateur tournaments in the state, carding a two-round total of 71-76—147 to put him 9-over par (par 69 course). That was good enough for a solo 11th-place finish, as Pat Scanlan took the top spot thanks to a playoff win over John McNeill when both finished at 3-over 141.
CCG’s John Varner was next for the locals in a tie for 17th place in the 100-player field. Varner shot 76-76—151 to put him at plus-13 for the tournament.
Tom Bergeron also snagged a top 30 finish in Plymouth, where he shot 76-79—155 to tie him for 30th position at plus-17.
Wardwell Vermont Hickory champ
Bill Wardwell of the Country Club of Greenfield won the Senior Division of the 10th annual Vermont Hickory Open held over the weekend at The Country Club of Barre in Plainfield, Vt..
Wardwell carded a total of 170 over 36 holes to capture the victory, which was his fourth consecutive Senior Division title.
Bill Conant, also from The Country Club of Greenfield, shot 171 and was the runner-up to Scott McAllister (Burlington, Vt.) in the Open Division.
Matt’s Men’s League
Fred Llewelyn’s 36 landed him low-gross honors during Week 13 of the Matt’s Men’s League held at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls on Tuesday.
Noah Wallace captured the low net with a 30. Alfie Mitchell was closest to the pin on No. 7 (4 feet, 2 inches), while Bob Wilson was closest on No. 9 (17-10).
Matt Betsold and Shawn Hubert earned the most points of the week with 5½, putting them into a three-way tie for first place on the season with 21½ points. Also checking in with 21½ points were the tandems of Mark Letourneau and Al Ghiz as well as Bob Samson and Jim Bassett.
Edge Hill Men’s League
Bob Story shot a low gross of 35, while Craig Leonard’s 29 gave him low-net honors during A Division action at Tuesday’s Edge Hill Men’s League.
Leonard had the top point quota with a plus-8, while Greg Bergeron was closest to the pin on No. 8 (17-5) in the A Division.
Tom Miner shot 39 to give him low-gross honors, while Rob Escott had the low net with a 31. Miner’s plus-11 was top point quota, while Jeff Carantit was closest to the pin on No. 8 (15-0).
Erving League
Ben Herk and Tim King combined for a 38 to snag low-gross honors after a match of cards with the team of Wally Herk and Rod Ebbighausen in the Erving League held Tuesday at the Northfield Golf Club.
Failing to win low-gross honors, Herk and Ebbighausen won the low-net contest with a score of 29.
Ebbighausen was on his game and won both closest-to-the-pin contests on No. 6 (13-7) and No. 7 (3-½).
Herk was the match medalist with a score of 38, beating the busy Ebbighausen with another match of cards.
CFC Ladies Sr. Championship
Terry Boyce posted a two-round total of 178 to give her the gross victory at the Crumpin Fox Club Ladies Senior Championship over the weekend.
Marty Stinson was the runner-up, posting a two-round total of 195.
Jan Puchalski captured the low-net for the weekend, posting a score of 151, while Tina Browne was second overall with a 173.

Babe Ruth fall ball
The Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball Association will hold its final registration session for its Fall Baseball League tonight from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Abercrombie Field in Greenfield. This session will be an attempt to fill another team for the upcoming season.
The Fall League is open to anyone age 12 through 14. Babe Ruth is the next step for those players aging out of Cal Ripken next season and Fall Ball is a great introduction to a full-size diamond.

Deerfield rec seeks coach
The Deerfield Recreation Department is looking for a field hockey coach. The instructional program is for children in Union 38 in grades 3-6. Instruction includes drills and skills with no games. WMass 18U tryouts
The Western Massachusets Warriors 18U travel softball team will hold tryouts on Aug. 21 at the Bourdeau Fields Complex at Turners Falls High School from 6 to 8 p.m.
The team is being coached by former Turners Falls player Jenna Putala. The team will play in tournaments and college recruiting showcases next summer and is open to players from any town. Players must be 19 or under on Feb. 1, 2018. If possible, players should bring birth certificates to tryouts.
