Carolyn Bach smacked three hits and drove in a pair of runs, leading Ashfield to a 21-5 victory over the Buckland Cubs in a Pioneer Valley Women’s Softball League game Tuesday night.

Taylor Boutwell had two hits and drove in four runs for Ashfield, while Sarah Crowell added a double and a triple and three RBI.

Lydia Dodge finished with two hits and an RBI to pace Buckland.

• Elsewhere, Cami MacDonald and Cassy Jouannet had three hits apiece to help Conway edge the Buckland Brew Crew, 9-8, on Tuesday.

Sam Torres added two hits in the victory for Conway.

Anna Winslow was 2-for-4 with a home run for Buckland, while Maura Crossman was 5-for-5 on the night.

Golf

Matt’s Men’s League

Bob Samson captured low gross (38) and low net (28) to pace the competition at Matt’s Men’s League played Tuesday at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls.

Samson was also closest to the pin on No. 9, landing his tee shot just 1 foot, 8 inches from the hole. Noah Wallace was closest on No. 7 (6-5).

Wayne DeGrenier and Andy Wyngowski along with Samson and Jim Bassett tied for the most points on Tuesday, as the pair each scored 5.5 in the 11th week of the league.

Two teams are tied for first place in the overall standings, as Matt Betsold and Shawn Hubert are atop the leaderboard with Mark Letourneau and Al Ghiz (13.5 points apiece).

Edge Hill Men’s League

Mark Eaton was the low-gross winner, carding a round of 40 at the Edge Hill Men’s League Tuesday.

Eaton also earned the point quota win in the A Division with a plus-9. Bill Buck took home low-net honors with a 37, while Craig Lenard was closest to the pin on No. 8 (13-6).

Jeff Carantit had the low gross in the B Division after firing a 43, and he also took home low net (32) and closest to the pin (13-1).

Jon Sonntag captured the top point quota at plus-11.

Montague Mug Race

The 37th annual Montague Mug Race is scheduled for Aug. 19, with the 5.5-mile road race “blasting” off at 8:30 a.m. from the Village Common.

Pewter Mugs are awarded to top male and female finishers, and coffee mugs will go to top finishers of each division. T-shirts are given to the first 90 runners. The course is well marked with plenty of water stops, and features a few challenging hills with a run along the Connecticut River.

Now in its 13th year, the Mini Mug Race will kick off at 8:35 a.m. This course measures two miles and is a great scenic route around the Old South Cemetery. Both races will finish at the ball field. All runners are entered into drawing for local prizes.

New referees course

The Connecticut Valley Soccer Officials Association will conduct an instructional course for new referees in August. Members of the CVSOA officiate scholastic soccer matches in Franklin and Hampshire counties during the autumn.

The instructional course includes five, two-hour classes conducted during evening hours and field training. The cost of the course is $50. Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and will be subjected to a national background check. Valley Storm tryouts

The Valley Storm 16U Suburban League softball team will hold tryouts on Wednesday and Thursday.

Tryouts will take place at Deerfield Elementary on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., and on Thursday at Merritt Field in Sunderland from 6 to 8 p.m. Pitchers and catchers should report to the field by 5 p.m. on both dates.
