Teagan Valeski was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, and she drove in two runs to help Shelburne Falls to a convincing 15-5 win over Goshen in a Pioneer Valley Women’s Softball League game Thursday night in Goshen.
Amanda Chapin drove in three runs in the win for Shelburne Falls, while Shirley MacLean and Taylor Chapin added two RBI apiece.
Goshen was paced by Ashley Tompkins (triple) and Whitney Roberts (double).
Northfield Summer Series
John Schatz traversed the 3.3-mile Northfield Summer Series course in 20 minutes, 2 seconds to capture the top spot in the weekly event Thursday night in Northfield.
Bob Bezio was the runner-up in 20:48, while Isaac Bingham (21:47), Marcy Cabanas (22:29), Kyle Sebring (22:42), Angela Schatz (23:24), Eli Koester (23:41), Derek Postmen (23:54), Jack Loud (25:57) and Paul Marguet (25:50) rounded out the top 10.
For the 10th race in the series to be held next week, the course will take a detour and the runners will traverse through the Dickinson Memorial Library for the annual library run.
Montague Mug Race
The 37th annual Montague Mug Race is scheduled for Aug. 19, with the 5.5-mile road race “blasting” off at 8:30 a.m. from the Village Common.
Pewter Mugs are awarded to top male and female finishers, and coffee mugs will go to top finishers of each division. T-shirts are given to the first 90 runners. The course is well marked with plenty of water stops, and features a few challenging hills with a run along the Connecticut River.
Now in its 13th year, the Mini Mug Race will kick off at 8:35 a.m. This course measures two miles and is a great scenic route around the Old South Cemetery. Both races will finish at the ball field. All runners are entered into drawing for local prizes.

Ken Morin took home top weekly point quota honors at plus-5 to pace the Knights of Columbus Golf League on Wednesday at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls.
Rodney Brunelle, Joe Kapitulik, Fran Togneri and Alan Wondoloski all tied for second place at plus-4.
Rodney Herzig took home closest to the pin honors on No. 7 (8 feet, 2 inches), while Steve Brown was closest on No. 9 (22-1).
Thomas Ladies League
Marilyn Kostanski’s plus-7 had her atop the Thomas Memorial Ladies League on Wednesday.
Kate Dwyer was next at plus-6, while Chante Jillson (plus-5), Deb Puchalski (plus-3) and Terry Rae (plus-3) rounded out the top 5.
Kostanski’s 43 gave her low-gross honors, while Jillson was closest to the pin on No. 7 (16-9).
New referees course
The Connecticut Valley Soccer Officials Association will conduct an instructional course for new referees in August. Members of the CVSOA officiate scholastic soccer matches in Franklin and Hampshire counties during the autumn.
The instructional course includes five, two-hour classes conducted during evening hours and field training. The cost of the course is $50. Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and will be subjected to a national background check. Valley Storm tryouts
The Valley Storm 16U Suburban League softball team will hold tryouts on Aug. 2 and Aug. 3.
Tryouts will take place at Deerfield Elementary on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., and on Thursday at Merritt Field in Sunderland from 6 to 8 p.m. Pitchers and catchers should report to the field by 5 p.m. on both dates.
