Brielle Widelo struck out 13 batters in the pitching circle, stranding the potential tying run at third base to end the game as the Greenfield Grizzlies slipped past Frontier Blue, 7-6, in a 12U Suburban League fast-pitch softball game Wednesday night at Merritt Field in Sunderland.
Faith Smith paced Greenfield’s offense with three hits, including a double, while Ava Widelo, Rachel Dodge, Alysia Knapp and Margarette Howland all added hits in the win.
Greenfield (6-2) led 7-0 in the fifth inning before Frontier came charging back to make things interesting. The hosts scored two in the sixth and eventually four in the seventh inning to get within 7-6 before Widelo shut the door to secure the key win.
Jillian Apanell struck out four in five innings of work for Frontier Blue. Taylor Barry led the squad with four hits, while Apanell added a double and a single. Megan Jolly doubled, while Izzy Palmisano, Daisy Venditti, Kaelyn Zakaitis and Kylie Laford each added a hit.
Greenfield travels to Agawam No. 1 tonight at 6 p.m., while Frontier Blue (4-4) hosts Ludlow’s EI Diamond Jaxx on Monday.
• Elsewhere, Holly Myers struck out eight to pick up the win as Frontier Red defeated West Springfield, 16-11, in 12U action Wednesday at Mittneague Park in West Springfield.
Gabby Frangie and Madison McKemmie paced the Frontier Red offense with two hits and three RBI apiece, while Hailey Hutkoski, Georgia Sackrey and Kali Berthiaume all added a hit and two RBI in the victory.
Frontier Red (5-4) will host Easthampton tonight at Merritt Field at 6.
Turners 14U
Olivia Whittier continued to tear the cover off the ball by smacking four hits and scoring three runs while also striking out three batters as the winning pitcher to help the Turners Falls Invaders to a 15-9 win over West Springfield in a 14U Suburban League tilt Wednesday at Mittneague Park in West Springfield.
Catie Reynolds was 2-for-5 with two RBI for Turners, while Mercedez Morales was 4-for-5 with four RBI.
The Invaders improved to 9-1 overall, and they’ll host Frontier on Tuesday.
Greenfield Co-Rec
Brian Ginnity smacked five hits, including a home run, and drove in five runs as Hubie’s Tavern thumped Taylor’s Tavern, 22-8, in a Greenfield Co-Rec Adult Softball League game Wednesday at Hillside Park.
Evan Rice registered four hits and four RBI in the win for Hubie’s, while Stefanie Williams also had four hits. Chris Arsenault chipped in three hits and three RBI.
Alex Clark’s two hits and two RBI paced Taylor’s in the battle of taverns, while Ryan Roberts also added a hit.
• Elsewhere, Andrew Doty was a perfect 5-for-5 to send the Montague Elks to a 23-15 slugfest win over RG Penfield & Sons at Green River Park on Wednesday.
Tionne Brown was 4-for-5 with a home run for the Elks, while Stephen Smith and Cassidy Snyder had four hits each in the victory.
Chris Bowman and Hannah Bellows paced the RG Penfield offense with three hits apiece.
• In other action, Luis Melendez totaled six RBI, finishing just a single shy of the cycle in Beck’s Auto’s 29-8 win over Riff’s North Restaurant and Bar at Green River Park.
Jenessa Murphy was 5-for-5 with a double in the win for Beck’s, while Uriah Bartlett was 4-for-5 with a home run and a pair of doubles. Kelly Sadler also had four hits, including a triple and a double.
Katherine Scarbrough was 2-for-3 for Riff’s, while Mike Kendall added three hits on the night.
Beacon Clay Court Classic
For the second day in a row, Steve Stone prevailed in three sets on Wednesday night. Stone edged Tim Prevost, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, to advance to the championship match in the Beacon Clay Court Classic in Greenfield.
Brian Lamore captured a 6-0, 6-4 win over Brian Fournier in the other semifinal on Wednesday, setting up a Lamore-Stone final scheduled for tonight at 5:30 p.m.
Timmons League
Walt Sanieski and Duff Delano captured the low gross with a 37 during Wednesday’s Timmons League at the Northfield Golf Course.
Doug Farrick and Matt Sykes took home the low net after a match of cards with a 30. Doug Farrick was match medalist with a 39, followed by John Hodgman with a 40.
Delano was closest to the pin on No. 6 (21 feet, 4 inches), while Eric Bush was closest on No. 7 (9-3).
DRIVE semifinals
Michael Menard and Garrett Cote combined for 30 points, lifting Pioneer to a 57-50 victory over Frontier in a DRIVE boys’ varsity basketball playoff semifinal on Tuesday in Northfield.
Donovan Hoffman led Frontier with 18 points, while Jared Muzyka tossed in 12.
• Elsewhere, Northampton No. 1 received 28 points from Henry Doherty en route to a 60-49 win over Northampton No. 2 in the other semifinal.
Anthony Mendez paced Noho No. 2 with 14 points.
Pioneer will meet Noho No. 1 in the boys’ varsity championship game.
