An offensive barrage provided more than enough to support to lift the Turners Falls Invaders to their fifth win of the season Tuesday night.
Under the lights at the Bourdeau Fields Complex, the squad needed just five innings to pick up a 15-2, mercy-rule shortened victory over Agawam in a Suburban League 14U softball game.
Taylor Murphy was 4-for-5 with three RBI to pace Turners Falls (5-1), while Taryn Thayer was 3-for-5 with two RBI and Jade Tyler was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI. Olivia Whittier had two hits in the win, while Mercedez Morales also had two hits and two RBI.
Tyler struck out eight in the pitching circle to capture the win, while Emily Young finished things up to shut down Agawam.
Turners is back in action Thursday when it plays Athol back at the Bourdeau Complex.
• In other Tuesday 14U action, Gianna Conte struck out 10 in four-plus innings to help the Greenfield Grizzlies to a 10-8 win over Frontier in South Deerfield.
Hayley Pelletier closed out the win for Greenfield in the circle, while Hannah Marchefka smacked a three-run double to pace the offense. Ellie Grader and Kaitlin Lavoine each added an RBI.
Ally Markowski tossed four innings for Frontier and was on base four times, while Jen Dobson drove in a pair of runs for the hosts.
Greenfield, which also beat Agawam via a 15-11 score on Monday, hosts Easthampton tonight at Murphy Park (6 p.m.).
Frontier 12U
Maria Konieczny, Megan Jolly, Izzy Palmisano, Lucy Howard and Daisy Venditti all had two hits as the Frontier Blue 12U softball team captured a convincing 22-11 win over Easthampton in a Suburban League contest on Monday night at Nonotuck Park in Easthampton.
Jessica Markowski, Taylor Barry, Delaney Fifield and Kaelyn Zakaitis all added hits in the victory for Frontier, which will play West Springfield tonight at Merritt Field in Sunderland.
Greenfield Co-Rec
Matt Gilbert was 4-for-4 with a triple, two doubles and six RBI, and teammate Doug Letourneau was 3-for-3 with a trio of RBI as Smitty’s Pub picked up a 17-11 win over Hubie’s Tavern in a Greenfield Co-Rec Adult Softball League game Tuesday night at Greenfield Middle School.
Brian Ginnity was 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in the loss for Hubie’s. Chris Arsenault added three hits and four RBI while Kelly Smith was 2-for-4 with a double.
• Elsewhere, Jeff Guy and Scott Curtis had four hits each, and Alan Mailloux drilled a three-run home run as part of a three-hit night to send Beck’s Auto past the Montague Elks, 19-12, at Green River Park on Tuesday.
Kat Chabot helped the offensive cause with three hits, as Guy tripled and doubled and Curtis tripled and added a pair of doubles.
PV Women’s Softball
Taylor Boutwell smacked three hits and drove in three runs Tuesday to lift Ashfield to a 21-6 win over the Brew Crew in a Pioneer Valley Women’s Softball League game.
Sarah Crowell doubled and drove in three for Ashfield, with teammate Caroline Bach registering four RBI.
Brew Crew was paced by Jess Hick’s double and two RBI, while Maura Crossman tripled and drove in a pair.
• Elsewhere, Amanda Chapin homered and Nichole Valeski doubled as Shelburne Falls thumped the Colrain Misfits, 18-6.
Jenny Dawson paced Colrain with a home run on the night.
Edge Hill Men’s League
Mark Eaton carded a low-gross 36 and scored eight points toward his point quota to highlight the Edge Hill Men’s League on Tuesday.
Ronnie Parker was closest to the pin in the A Division on No. 8 (13 feet, 3 inches) and also snagged the low net with a 32.
Charles Plesnar’s 42 put him atop the gross standings in the B Division, and he also topped the point quota with a plus-6 in addition to being closest on No. 8 (15-4). Jeff Carantit’s 32 gave him low-net honors in the B Division.
Matt’s Men’s League
Matt Betsold swept low gross (37) and low net (30) to finish atop the ninth week of the Matt’s Men’s League at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club on Tuesday.
Betsold was also closest to the pin on No. 9 (4-5), while Russ Kimball was closest on No. 7 (6-11). Ken Adams and Jeff Miller took home the most points of the week with six to put them atop the standings.
Hatfield Open
The 22nd annual Greater Hatfield Open will be held on Aug. 6 at the Country Club of Greenfield. Shotgun start is at 1 p.m., and the format will be a four or five-person scramble with pro shop prizes for the winners.
The entry deadline is July 28, and the fee will be $75 per player to help benefit Smith Academy golf. That fee includes greens fees, carts, prizes and food.

New referees course
The Connecticut Valley Soccer Officials Association will conduct an instructional course for new referees in August. Members of the CVSOA officiate scholastic soccer matches in Franklin and Hampshire counties during the autumn.
The instructional course includes five, two-hour classes conducted during evening hours and field training. The cost of the course is $50. Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and will be subjected to a national background check. Greenfield 10s
Brayden Thayer and Heath Gomez had the lone hits Sunday, when the Greenfield 10U All-Stars settled for a runner-up finish at the Green Monster Tournament held at Mini-Fenway Park in Belchertown.
In Sunday’s championship game, Greenfield dropped an 11-1 decision to Enfield, Conn., to place second in the A Division. It was the second defeat at the hands of Enfield, which also won an 18-8 game against Greenfield earlier in the weekend.
The squad captured a pair of victories over the weekend, beginning with a 9-7 win over Forest Park on Saturday on the strength of two hits each from Jackson Campbell, Ethan Quinn and Jake Brook. Thayer and Aidan Bailey also had hits in the victory.
Greenfield claimed a 9-5 win over Somers, Conn., in Belchertown as well, with Heath Gomez tossing a complete-game on the mound and going 2-for-3 with a double at the plate.
Bailey smacked three hits, while Campbell and Brook had two hits apiece. William Ainsworth and Braeden Tsipenyuk added hits.
Greenfield 9s
In the 12-team state tournament in Pepperell over the weekend, the Greenfield 9U Cal Ripken team performed very well, finishing in a tie for fourth place but ultimately just missing out on a semifinal berth due to run-rule differential tiebreaker.
Greenfield beat Berkshire in the opening pool play game, 16-3, and lost to eventual runner-up Pepperell, 12-2, before rebounding with a 7-6 win over Northbridge to go 2-1 in pool play.
Mason Fiorey, Tyler Yetter, Ben Werner, Aidan Shea and Luca Siano were the offensive leaders in the tournament for Greenfield, while Jackson Petrin was a stellar defender behind the plate and Yetter excelled at shortstop.
Shea and Siano posted strong pitching outings, with Shea striking out nine in six innings of work and Siano striking out seven in four innings.
Beacon Tennis Classic
The 2017 Beacon Clay Court Tennis Classic is scheduled to be played Monday through July 28 at the Beacon Field courts. The single-elimination men’s singles event will be best of three with a 12-point tiebreaker.
Players must start play by 5:30 p.m. each day or be subject to default. Each player must bring a can of unopened tennis balls to each match. The winner keeps the unopened can. Players must be availbelt to play all week or until the draw is completed. The final will be played on July 31.

Montague Mug Race
The 37th annual Montague Mug Race is scheduled for Aug. 19, with the 5.5-mile road race “blasting” off at 8:30 a.m. from the Village Common.
Pewter Mugs are awarded to top male and female finishers, and coffee mugs will go to top finishers of each division. T-shirts are given to the first 90 runners. The course is well marked with plenty of water stops, and features a few challenging hills with a run along the Connecticut River.
Now in its 13th year, the Mini Mug Race will kick off at 8:35 a.m. This course measures two miles and is a great scenic route around the Old South Cemetery. Both races will finish at the ball field. All runners are entered into drawing for local prizes.

Old Coach A 5K
Registration is underway for The Old Coach A 5K Run, intended to be a celebration of the coaching career of Southwick High School’s Dick Atkinson.
Coach A, a 1984 inductee into the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame, is a legend among runners in Western Massachusetts. During his 53-year tenure at Southwick he trained numerous WMass, State, and New England individual champions and earned numerous league and divisional team championships. Coach Atkinson is the founder of indoor track in the Pioneer Valley, a league which has grown to 27 teams. Proceeds from the race will be used to fund scholarships for runners and to promote youth running programs in Western Mass.
