On the strength of an offense that continued to hit the ball hard, the Montague Elks ran the table to capture the championship of the Newt Guilbault Community Baseball League on Wednesday night. The Elks rode the offensive prowess of its star players to capture a 9-3 win over Greenfield Savings Bank in Game 2 of the best-of-three series at Campbell Field in Turners Falls. The Elks swept the series, 2-0, after edging GSB by a 6-4 margin in Game 1 on Tuesday.
Gavin Rubio had three hits, including a double, and struck out seven batters in three innings of relief pitching to pace the Elks. Hugh Cyhowski also had three hits and an RBI to go with seven strikeouts in three innings as the starting and winning pitcher.
Joaquin Rubio singled and doubled while also driving in three runs, while Caleb Thomas added a double for the Elks.
Cayden Lehtomaki struck out nine batters over five innings for GSB and also added a single. Gabe Voudren tripled and singled on the night.
The Elks finished their championship season with a perfect 18-0 record.
Jason Quinn struck out nine over six innings, and Jake Petrin and Dylan Archer delivered go-ahead hits in the bottom of the fourth inning as Maniatty Real Estate captured the Majors Division championship of the Greenfield Minor League on Wednesday night.
Maniatty broke a 5-5 tie with two runs in the fourth and rode the pitching of Quinn from there to edge New Fortune Restaurant, 7-5, in a decisive Game 3 of the best-of-three series at Lunt Field.
Quinn added a double and a single at the plate for Maniatty, which received a pair of hits from Petrin. Archer, James Staelens and Brody Gagne all had singles in the victory.
Matt Houghton had the big blow for New Fortune, smacking a two-run home run in the top of the third inning that gave his team a 5-3 lead at the time.
Wyatt Edes, Charlie Boyden, Ian Simpson and Aaron Burstein also had hits for New Fortune, which once again received a stellar relief pitching performance from Peter Loud.
Greenfield will host the Cal Ripken 10U District Tournament at Lunt, beginning with games today and continuing through Sunday. Greenfield, Turners Falls, Hadley, Frontier and Northampton will all field teams.
