Tyler Charbonneau drove in five runs and John Atkins allowed just three hits and no runs over five-plus innings as Teddy Bear Pools won its second game in as many nights with a 10-0 shutout of DiFranco Realty in a Tri-County League men’s amateur baseball game Wednesday at G.T. Valiton Field in South Deerfield.
Atkins struck out four and walked four during his stint on the mound, holding DiFranco scoreless. Seth Bella-Hunter finished up the victory, getting the final two outs in the sixth to shut the door before Teddy Bear scored four times in the home half to end the game early due to the mercy rule.
Seth Leslie had three hits and added an RBI for Teddy Bear (3-5), while Cory Shearer had two hits and drove in a pair. David White also had two hits, while Brad Bean tripled for the Poolmen.
Teddy Bear scored four runs in the third and two in the fourth to take a commanding 6-0 lead. The Poolmen pounded out 14 hits and didn’t commit an error for the second straight game.
The squad is back in action Friday night when DiFranco returns to South Deerfield for another TCL contest at 6 p.m.
Junior Legion
Max Charest drove a double to the gap with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, allowing Greenfield Post 81 to walk-off with a 4-3 win over Ludlow Post 52 in an American Legion Baseball Junior Division game Wednesday night under the lights at Veterans Memorial Field.
Trailing 3-2 after Ludlow scored a run in the top of the eighth, Greenfield (7-1 overall) got to work in the home half. Jacob Bryant tied the game with an RBI single, and Charest followed with a double to the gap that plated the winning run and the walk-off 4-3 victory.
The run made a winner out of relief pitcher Owen Phelps, who came on and pitched well over the final three innings. Phelps struck out six and allowed just one hit, coming on for starter Joel Peabody who struck out four in five innings of work.
Kalen Evans and Charest had two hits apiece to pace the Post 81 offense, as the team managed eight hits, with three coming in the eighth inning alone.
Post 81 returns to action tonight when it hosts Longmeadow at Vets Field (7 p.m.).
Greenfield Cup
Defending champion Chris Deszynski will have a chance to defend his title at the Greenfield Tennis Cup.
Deszynski swept Sean Ahn, 6-0, 6-0, in the semifinals Wednesday night, advancing to the finals for the second consecutive year.
Deszynski will meet Rick Miner, who dispatched Gary Gronokowski, 6-0, 6-2, in Wednesday’s other semifinal. Deszynski and Miner will tangle tonight at 5:30 at the Beacon Courts with the championship on the line.
The women’s final will be a battle for family bragging rights. Alexis Silk defeated Francie Garanin, 6-3, 6-1, in the Wednesday semifinal, setting the stage for an all-Silk championship this afternoon. Alexis Silk will meet Jenna Silk at 12:30, also at Beacon Courts.
Greenfield Suburban
Kameryn Dearborn struck out 15 batters in five innings of work, dominating visiting Easthampton to help the Greenfield Grizzlies to a 12-0 victory in a Suburban Softball League 12-and-under game Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Field.
Dearborn added a double at the plate, while Faith Smith, Julia Kovalsick, Alysia Knapp and Anna Bucala all slashed a pair of hits for Greenfield.
The Grizzlies are back in action Monday in West Springfield.
• Elsewhere, Gia Gottschalk was 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs but Frontier Red dropped a 5-4 decision to SoHo Heat in 12U action Wednesday at Merritt Field in Sunderland.
Georgia Sackrey added an RBI single for Frontier, while Julia Hioe singled and scored a run while also striking out six in a complete-game effort in the pitching circle.
K of C League
Jim Herzig scored the top point quota of the week, as his plus-12 led the way at the Knights of Columbus Golf League held at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls on Wednesday.
Ron Lenois Jr. was plus-9 to finish second, while Bill Brown and Charlie Peters tied for third at plus-6.
Chet Czernich landed his approach on No. 7 closest to the pin at 2 feet, 9 inches, while Jim Koldis was closest on No. 9 (12-3).
Thomas Women’s League
Sue Overstreet and Karren Sacco tied for low gross after firing identical 46s at the Thomas Memorial Ladies League on Wednesday.
Kate Dwyer earned top weekly point quota honors with a plus-7, followed by Terry Rae at plus-6.
Sacco was closest to the pin on No. 7 (13-0) and closest to the line on No. 6.
Greenfield Elks League
Jim Elwell and Tom Willis hold a tight lead in the Greenfield Elks Golf League at the Country Club of Greenfield, as the duo finished Wednesday night action with 50 points to stand atop the leaderboard.
John Cariddi and Stan Maynard are right on their heels in second place, just one-half point back with 49½.
Ed Reagey was closest to the pin on No. 2, landing his shot within 8-8.
DRIVE boys’ varsity
Ryan Underwood and Jordan Loughman both finished in double figures, as the duo combined for 23 points to send the Panthers past Twin Valley (Vt.), 65-25, in a DRIVE Hoops Boys’ Varsity Basketball League game at Pioneer Valley Regional School.
Finn Fisher scored a team-high seven points for Twin Valley.
• Elsewhere, Jeff Ritter poured in 15 points as Keene defeated the Montague Elks, 57-47.
Josh Obuchowski led the Elks with 12 points in the contest.
• In other action at Pioneer, Frontier’s Colin Evans tallied 13 points, guiding his squad to a 46-28 win over Smith Voke.
Drew Brida notched a game-high 16 points for Smith Voke.
• In action at Hopkins Academy, Easthampton’s Mike Moynihan scored 20 points en route to his team’s 57-41 win over Belchertown.
Belchertown’s John Nolan led his team with 11 points.
• Also, Kieran Thurston registered 15 points as Noho 1 defeated Hampshire, 59-44.
Hampshire’s David Helms led his team with 13 points.
• Finally, Jaden Jondra dropped a whopping 26 points as Noho 2 thumped Hatfield, 76-45.
Jack Zigmont’s 10 points paced Hatfield.
Mickey Mantle
Jordan Grenier came on in relief to slam the door shut, working out of a jam in the sixth and tossing a scoreless seventh inning to preserve a 9-4 win for Mohawk Hilltown Hardwood Flooring in a Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League Mickey Mantle game against Frontier on Wednesday night at Headmaster’s Field in Deerfield.
Wyatt Bandy-Page earned the win for Mohawk, which won its fifth game in a row. Cody Letourneau was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Grenier added two hits and drove in a run. Cam Lococo came through with a two-run double and scored three runs in the victory.
Sandy Koufax
Ben Martino struck out three and didn’t allow a run, as Frontier-Alber Hearing Services blanked Palmer, 10-0, in a Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League Sandy Koufax contest on Tuesday night at Headmaster Field in Deerfield.
Kyle Barnes had two hits and an RBI in the win for Frontier, while Rowan Blair (two RBI), Tom Alber (double), Dylan Martin (single, RBI), Martino (single) and Alec Kirkendall (single) all contributed in the victory.
Greenfield Co-Rec
Chris Zukowski launched three home runs, propelling Smitty’s Pub to a 28-12 victory over the Spirit Shoppe in a Greenfield Co-Rec Softball League game Wednesday night at Greenfield Middle School.
Amanda Haney was 3-for-4 in the win for Smitty’s, while Mitch Mailloux was 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs. Matt Gilbert also had four hits, falling just a homer shy of the cycle.
Tim Sevrens was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles for Spirit Shoppe, which also received two hits from Brendan Hatzi.
• Elsewhere, Robert Badillo smoked four hits, including a pair of doubles, and Shera Rosario and Chelsea Tierney had three hits each as Taylor’s Tavern rocked Riff’s North, 15-6, at Green River No. 2.
Rob Edwards paced Riff’s with two hits, including a home run, while Katherine Scarbrough was 2-for-4 with a double.
FC Clinic
Registrations are now being accepted for the Franklin County Field Hockey Clinic, which will take place July 10 through 14 at Greenfield High School.
The clinic is run by GHS coach Erin Thayer and Frontier Regional School coach Missy Mahar as well as high school players from both schools. It is open to students entering grades third through seventh.
The clinic runs each day from 9 a.m. until noon and costs $175. Players can purchase an equipment package (which includes stick, ball, mouth guard and shin guard) for an additional $56.
The clinic will focus on stretching and footwork drills, fundamental skills, and offensive and defensive skills as well as small games and 7 vs. 7 scrimmages.
