CONWAY — The state Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is expected to begin wrapping up a Route 116 bridge improvement project that spans South River.
Since May, a temporary traffic light has funneled cars through one open lane of the bridge that sits just outside the center of town. MassDOT Spokesman Patrick Marvin said on Thursday “the majority of the work, including all the slope repairs, is expected to be completed this week.”
“The full scope of work includes grading the existing slope, installation of stone filled gabion baskets to help support the steeper sections of the embankment and the placement of stones to help prevent future erosion,” Marvin said.
Other work includes roadway patching, replacement of sections of sidewalk, and reinstallation of a guardrail. The bridge, which is on Route 116, is controlled by the state.
Marvin noted that “MassDOT is conducting its operations in ways that consider upcoming public events and celebrations in order to minimize the impact on the local community,” notably, the town’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
