GREENFIELD — For all the accomplishments Olivia Joy has racked up in her budding career, she had never once tossed a perfect game of any sort for Greenfield High School.

That changed Thursday night.

The sophomore hurler did not allow a baserunner over five innings, striking out 12 of the 15 batters she faced to secure a five-inning perfect game in the fourth-seeded Green Wave’s 15-0 victory over No. 13 Franklin County Technical School in the preliminary round of the Western Mass. Division III Softball Tournament at Veterans Memorial Field.

“This is one of those games where we said, ‘Why not go out there and try and throw a perfect game?’” Greenfield coach Rian Lovett said of Joy’s outing. “Just go out and don’t hold anything back. She worked on some things and she threw the ball very well.”

Joy’s shutdown performance powered Greenfield (17-2) to a quarterfinal matchup Monday night (6 p.m.) against No. 5 Athol High School, a 12-0 Thursday winner over Hoosac Valley High School. The two teams split a pair of regular-season Franklin County League contests.

“Knowing we’ve already lost to (Athol) once and we’re trying to get to (the semifinals at) UMass for the first time with these girls, there’s a lot of motivation,” Lovett said of the quarterfinal showdown. “These girls want to beat them again, when it matters in the tournament.”

While Joy stole the show when Greenfield was in the field, the Wave offense also came to play. Kirsten Ward was 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Lizzy Howland was also 3-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI. Sam Smith had two hits and scored three times, and Nicole Miner also had two hits and an RBI out of the No. 9 hole.

Greenfield led 2-0 after one inning before pushing seven runs across in the second to take a commanding 9-0 advantage. Ward had a key two-run single in the frame as the Wave snatched control of the contest. Lexxie Rowell, Grace Kennedy and Isabella Justiniano all added RBI.

Joy struck out at least two batters in each of her five innings. She struck out the side in the second and fourth innings.

Tech (11-10), which finished third in the Tri-County League this season, was paced by senior pitcher Rachel Shearer’s one strikeout in four innings of action. It was the Eagles’ second game in three days after battling Tuesday with Smith Vocational & Agricultural High School in the Small School State Agricultural Tournament.

The two teams played twice during the regular season and Greenfield won both by double-digits.

“Being the favorite, or favored because you’re playing at home as the higher seed, that’s not always the best thing for a team that hasn’t been to the semifinals before,” Lovett cautioned of her team’s approach. “But the girls did a nice job staying in the moment and getting the job done.”

The winner of the Greenfield/Athol game will meet the winner of No. 1 Turners Falls High School and No. 8 McCann Technical School in the D-III semifinals at UMass’ Sortino Field next week. The Turners/McCann game is slated for Sunday night at 7.
