Isaiah Morrison won three events, helping visiting Greenfield High School to a 93-52 victory over Frontier Regional School in an Intercounty League boys’ track and field meet Wednesday afternoon in South Deerfield.
Morrison captured the pole vault (13 feet, 6 inches), long jump (18-2½) and 400 hurdles (61.8 seconds), setting the tone for the Green Wave (2-3, 2-3 IL).
Asier Areta (high jump, 5-8) and Ben Rodriguez (javelin, 119-4) also won field events for Greenfield, which swept the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.
Matt Carlson won two events to pace Frontier (2-3, 2-3), finishing first in the discus (99-11) and shot put (39-7). Phaelon Koski captured the triple jump, leaping to a distance of 37 feet, ¾ inches.
Mahar 113, Pope Francis 32 — Ash Shaw won a pair of events and finished second in another and Mahar Regional School cruised to a 113-32 win over Pope Francis High School in an independent boys’ track and field meet Wednesday at the Woodward Complex in Orange.
Shaw won the high jump (5-6) and 400-meter run (54.1), and finished second in the 100 (11.9) to lead the Senators (6-0), who swept the top three spots in five of the events. Bryce Cleveland won the javelin (125-9) and the discus (106-9) for Mahar, and Hugo Frost won the triple jump (38-¼) and the 400 hurdles (60.8).
Nick Sharp won the shot put (40-7¼), Nick Stafford won the long jump (17-8) and Cam Mosher won the pole vault (10-6), while Aaron Hendry 110 high hurdles (16.9), John Gariepy won the 100 (11.8), and Thor Mead won the 2-mile (11:54).
Athol 3, Commerce 0 — Athol High School spread the load Wednesday when 10 players registered at least one kill during the Red Raiders’ 25-13, 25-14, 25-14 win over High School of Commerce in an independent boys’ volleyball match in Athol.
Justin Blake finished with 10 kills, five aces and four digs for the Red Raiders (9-7), and Colby Soltysik had 14 assists and four digs. Ryan Warner and Jordan Carrasquillo each finished with five kills.
Greenfield 3, Sci-Tech 2 — Greenfield High School won two matches and picked up a forfeit at another and the Wave was able to defeat Springfield School of Science & Technology, 3-2, in a Tri-County League boys’ tennis match Wednesday in Springfield.
The Green Wave (5-5) dropped the first two singles matches of the afternoon but won at third singles and first doubles. Coupled with the forfeit victory at second doubles, it was enough to send the Wave home with the victory.
George Balis earned the Wave’s win at third singles, 6-1, 6-0, over Miguel Gonzales, while Brandon Siow and Aaron Do bested Tony Martinez and Collins Sasen 6-0, 6-0 at first doubles for the other Wave victory. Sci-Tech earned a point at first singles, where Brandon Stewart beat Fahrah Day 6-0, 6-0, and another at second singles, where Xavier Farell beat Victor Ivancev 6-4, 6-1.
Greenfield travels to Turners Falls High School on Friday.
Turners 5, St. Mary’s 0 — Turners Falls won every set it played Wednesday en route to a 5-0 win over St. Mary’s Parrish School in a TCL boys’ tennis match in Westfield.
Turners Falls (7-4) needs one more win to qualify for tournament.
Jimmy Vaughn defeated Pat Boyle, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), at first singles, Ricky Craver bested Dom Nomakeo, 6-2, 6-1, at second singles, and Brian Poirier topped Jared Rusin, 6-2, 6-4, at third singles.
Jovanni Ruggiano and Nick Morin earned a win at first doubles over Joe Wilcox and Aaron Kielbasa with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Joe Kochan and David Johnson picked up a 6-0, 6-3 victory at second doubles over Nick Gregoire and Mark Nelson.
Mohawk 3, Turners 2 — Lilly Seaver’s three-set victory at first singles propelled visiting Mohawk Trail Regional High School to a tight 3-2 win over Turners Falls High School in a Tri-County League North girls’ tennis match Tuesday afternoon in Turners Falls.
Seaver shook off an opening set loss to edge Turners’ Alyshia Wozniak, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Mary Monohan picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles for Mohawk (3-5, 2-4 TCL), while Emelia Seaver made it a singles sweep at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Turners (3-8, 1-4) won both doubles matches on the afternoon. Kaili Lynch and Hailey Trott teamed for a 6-1, 6-1 win at first doubles, while the No. 2 tandem of Amber Taylor and Rachel Tucker were easy 6-0, 6-0 winners.
The teams turn right back around and play again today, this time in Buckland.
Frontier 4, St. Mary’s 1 — Celia Speth remained unbeaten at first singles and Frontier defeated St. Mary’s Parrish School, 5-0, in an independent girls’ tennis match Wednesday in South Deerfield.
Speth improved to 9-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jessica Demers. Tori Bowen added a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ashley Forest at third singles for another point.
Frontier also swept at doubles as Anna Zera and Mary Laurens beat Alexus Shedd and Erin Olearcek, 6-0, 6-4, at first doubles, while Ashley Levasseur and Ian Newman beat Maura O’Neil and Gina Mulvenna, 6-2, 6-0, at second doubles.
Frontier (8-1) heads to Palmer High School on Monday.
