MONTAGUE — General Pierce Bridge will be limited to one lane next week, Monday, May 8 to Friday, May 12 for a Massachusetts Department of Transportation bridge inspection.
The inspection work on the bridge will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and then 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
In February, traffic was limited to one lane because of a large pothole in the road.
About a year ago, Montague Police Chief Charles Dodge addressed public concerns about the bridge.
In a letter to the Board of Selectmen, forwarded to MassDOT, Dodge said, “If I chose to ignore the condition of the General Pierce Bridge, then I would be letting down the very people I have been sworn to protect.”
MassDOT officials said a year ago that they had not put money aside to fix the bridge yet, but instead were working on a 5-year capital investment plan that was set to include rehabilitation of the structure, in an $18 million project.
As for this upcoming week, Montague police suggested in a Facebook post to take an alternate route to avoid traffic.
