On the strength of hat tricks from three different players, the Northfield-Mount Hermon girls’ lacrosse team picked up a win in its season opener Wednesday at home.

The Hoggers (1-0) received a trio of goals from Hailey Harms (2 assists), Mimi Lazore (1 assist) and Taylor Zuberer en route to a tight 12-11 win over Westminster School.

NMH also received single goals from Ellie Fellows, Jacelyn Lazore and Sydney Mitchell, while Fellows and Lazore registered helpers in the victory.

Goalkeeper Athieno Ngowe recorded six saves in the NMH cage. Westminster’s Kendall Brown tallied a game-high 4 goals in the losing effort.

• Elsewhere, the NMH boys’ volleyball team was unable to gain traction in a 25-10, 25-14, 25-9 loss on the road at Phillips Exeter Academy on Wednesday.

NMH’s Erich Roman paced the Hoggers with 8 kills in the loss.

Deerfield opens spring season

A pair of tight losses for the baseball and softball teams kicked off the 2017 spring for the Deerfield Academy athletic programs Wednesday.

The softball team fell at home to Cushing Academy, 7-4, while the baseball team dropped a 5-3 decision to Loomis Chaffee School.

• The DA boys’ lacrosse team had the most dominant performance of the day for the Big Green, blowing past Berkshire School, 20-6, on the road. The JV boys’ lax team added an 8-7 overtime win over Avon Old Farms.

• In girls’ lacrosse action, the varsity side dropped a 17-13 decision to St. Mark’s School, while the JV team turned the tables and beat St. Mark’s, 12-4.

• Elsewhere, the Deerfield Academy varsity golf team took third in a match against Loomis Chaffee and Brunswick School. The Green’s total of 211 put them back of Brunswick (192) and Loomis (204).

• On the road at Suffield Academy, the DA girls’ varsity water polo team suffered an 11-3 setback Wednesday.

Colleges

UMass softball splits with FDU

Junior Meg Colleran tossed seven innings, allowing just one run and four hits with eight strikeouts, to salvage a split of a doubleheader for the UMass softball team Wednesday. The Minutewomen captured a 5-1 win in the second game against Fairleigh Dickinson at Sortino Field after dropping a 4-3 decision in the opener.

Sophomore Erin Stacevicz went 2-for-3 and scored two runs in the Game 2 victory, while freshman Kate Dennis went 2-for-2 and scored two runs. Freshman Candace Denis was credited with an RBI and a run scored.

In the opening loss, freshman Quinn Breidenbach earned the start in the circle and tossed 5⅔ innings, allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out two batters. Colleran came on in relief to face four batters.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha went 2-for-4 at the dish with a pair of RBI to pace the UMass offense.

Running

IAS speed clinic

Two free co-ed speed clinics for athletes in grades 7 through 12 will be offered at Indoor Action Sports in Greenfield. The 90-minute sessions are geared to improve speed, agility, quickness, and benefit athletes from any sport.

The clinics are scheduled for April 18 at 6:30 or April 29 at 10:30 a.m. Learn proper acceleration/sprint technique. A 30-athlete limit per session; go to thefastpractice.com to register.

Baseball

Post 81 tryouts on horizon

The Greenfield Post 81 American Legion Baseball program will hold tryouts for its Senior and Junior Division teams on four upcoming days at Veterans Memorial Field in Greenfield.

Tryouts will take place on April 30 and then on May 6, 7 and 13. Senior Division players (ages 19 and under as of Dec. 31, 2017) will meet at 1 p.m. each day, while Junior Division players (ages 17 and under as of Dec. 31, 2017) will meet at 3 p.m. All players will meet at 3 p.m. on May 13 (no 1 p.m. tryouts) and the teams will be selected and players notified that evening.

Players from all Franklin County schools are eligible to try out and should bring glove, cleats and birth certificate. Players from previous a Post 81 roster must attend tryouts to be eligible and players should make as many tryouts as possible.
