It was not a pleasant trip to the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough Wednesday afternoon, when the UMass baseball team was easily dispatched by Boston College, 13-1, in a non-conference tilt.
UMass (6-10) fell behind with a pair of BC (13-1) runs in the bottom of the first, before the Eagles broke the game open with a five-run third inning.
The Minutemen’s lone run came in the top the sixth thanks to a one-out homer to right by senior Mike Geannelis, his first of the season. Senior Jon Avallone and sophomore Ryan Lever provided the only other hits for UMass, a double in the fifth and a single in the eighth.
Sophomore Connor Donahue started for the Minutemen and took the loss, allowing seven runs on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts over three innings.
UMass is back in action Friday, when the Minutemen head to Morehead State to open a three-game series.
Race to end child abuse
The Race to End Child Abuse 5K run/walk will take place Saturday at The Children’s Advocacy Center at 56 Wisdom Way in Greenfield.
Registration for the event is at 8 a.m. The race begins at 9 a.m. There is no registration fee for the race, but donations for the Children’s Advocacy Center will be accepted.
IAS speed clinics
Two free co-ed speed clinics for athletes in grades 7 through 12 will be offered at Indoor Action Sports in Greenfield. The 90-minute sessions are geared to improve speed, agility, quickness, and benefit athletes from any sport.
The clinics are scheduled for April 18 at 6:30 or April 29 at 10:30 a.m. Learn proper acceleration/sprint technique. A 30-athlete limit per session; go to thefastpractice.com and register.
This event is sponsored by Indoor Action Sports at 1385 Bernardston Rd. IAS will accept non-perishable food donations for the ‘Center for Self-Reliance Food Pantry of Greenfield.’ Donation are not required but appreciated.
Montague Parks & Rec
The Montague Parks & Recreation Department is taking registrations for several upcoming programs.
• T-ball is being offered for children ages 4 to 6 from April 22 through June 3. The child must be at least 4 years of age before the start date of the program. Proof of age will be required at the time of registration. The program will run Saturday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Regular fees after March 25 will be $40 for Montague residents, $45 for non-residents.
• Rookie League baseball for children ages 7 to 9 will run from April 22 through June 3 at Unity Park. Practices/scrimmages are slated for Saturday mornings from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The fee for residents is $40 and $45 for non-residents. MPRD recommends kindergarten players start with tee-ball before playing rookie ball. This is a coach-pitch program. The deadline for registration is April 1 or until the roster is full.
• Nipper League softball for girls ages 7 to 9 will run from early April through mid-June. Practices will take place on weekdays with times to be determined. League games will vary between weeknights and weekends. Games will be played at either Unity Park, Highland Park or Murphy Park in Greenfield.
The fee for Montague residents is $50, non-residents $55. MPRD recommends that kindergarten players start with tee-ball before playing Nipper League. This is a coach-pitch league. Registration deadline is today or until the roster is full.
• Senior League softball for girls ages 10 to 12 will run from early April until mid-June, with all games taking place at Murphy Park in Greenfield. Practices will be held weekdays at a time to be determined. Games vary between weeknights and weekends. The fee for Montague residents is $70, non-residents $75. Registration runs through today or until the roster is full.

Babe Ruth Registrations
Registration for the Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League continues this week. Players ages 12 to 15 (as of April 30) can register at one of the following dates from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m:

• Friday: Frontier Regional School.
Registration fee is $175 for the season. After raffle ticket sales, $75 will be reimbursed.

Prospective refs course
The local scholastic soccer officials association will conduct an instructional course for new referees during April and May. Members of the Connecticut Valley Soccer Officials Association referee scholastic games of all levels in Hampshire and Franklin counties and in Athol during fall.
