Jack Kniffin scored with 1 minute, 12 seconds left in overtime to lift Brown University over UMass, 10-9, in a men’s lacrosse game Saturday at Garber Field in Amherst.
The loss dropped UMass to 3-5 on the season.
Brown led 4-3 after the first quarter, thanks to a pair of goals by Luke McCaleb, who scored with 29 seconds left in the quarter to put the Bears in front. UMass came back in the second quarter with three goals to take a 6-4 lead into the break. Tyler Bogart tied the game early in the second quarter for UMass before Dan Muller scored twice to end the quarter.
The teams traded goals in the third quarter to send UMass into the fourth up 7-5, but Brown went on a four-goal fourth-quarter surge, spurred on by two from Michael Panepinto. UMass tied the game late to send the game into OT.
D.J. Smith made 16 saves in the loss.
UMass opens Colonial Athletic Association play against Delaware at Garber Field on Saturday.
UMass women win
UMass scored five straight goals in the second half Sunday en route to a 10-7 win over Marist in a women’s lacrosse game Saturday at Garber Field in Amherst.
The UMass defense held the Red Foxes scoreless for the final 19 minutes as they scored the five straight goals. UMass (5-3) opens Atlantic 10 action this weekend.
Abby Walker scored three times for UMass, while Hannah Burnett added two goals. Sarah Croke chipped in two assists for her first two career points. Sarah Crowley tied a UMass single-game record with six caused turnovers.
UMass opened the game on a four-goal run, but Marist answered with four straight of its own to tie the game at the break. Holly Turner scored early in the second half to give UMass a 5-4 lead, but Marist scored three straight to take a 7-5 lead. UMass came back with the five straight to end the game, including two straight by Walker to tie the game. Cassidy Doster scored an unassisted goal for the eventual game-winner, before Santos and Burnett closed out the scoring.
Babe Ruth Registrations
Registration for the Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League continues this week. Players ages 12 to 15 (as of April 30) can register at one of the following dates from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m:

• Friday: Frontier Regional School.

Race to end child abuse
The Race to End Child Abuse 5K run/walk will take place Saturday at The Children’s Advocacy Center at 56 Wisdom Way in Greenfield.
Registration for the event is at 8 a.m. The race begins at 9 a.m. There is no registration fee for the race, but donations for the Children’s Advocacy Center will be accepted.
Bridge Race fund drive
The Bridge of Flowers Classic Races is looking for local charities to collaborate with for the Aug. 12 event to be held in Shelburne Falls. Charities who work with the race will receive a portion of the net proceeds from the event and use the race’s resources to collect pledges and develop volunteers. The race’s 10K Classic and the Steve Lewis Subaru 3K Charity Run/Walk attract over 1,000-plus runners a year and over 3,000-plus to Shelburne Falls for the day.
“The Bridge of Flowers Races has a tradition of working with several charities over the years,” said Carole Appleton, 2017 Race Director. “It is a win-win for the both, as the charity can do fundraising without the stress of putting an event together and the race gets additional volunteers to assist with the community event.”

Prospective refs course
The local scholastic soccer officials association will conduct an instructional course for new referees during April and May. Members of the Connecticut Valley Soccer Officials Association referee scholastic games of all levels in Hampshire and Franklin counties and in Athol during fall.

Eaglebrook School Camps

Montague Parks & Rec
The Montague Parks & Recreation Department is taking registrations for several upcoming programs.
• T-ball is being offered for children ages 4 to 6 from April 22 through June 3. The child must be at least 4 years of age before the start date of the program. Proof of age will be required at the time of registration. The program will run Saturday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Early Bird registration runs through March 25, and rates are $35 for Montague residents, $40 for non-residents. Regular fee after March 25 will be $40 for Montague residents, $45 for non-residents.
• Rookie League baseball for children ages 7 to 9 will run from April 22 through June 3 at Unity Park. Practices/scrimmages are slated for Saturday mornings from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The fee for residents is $40 and $45 for non-residents. MPRD recommends kindergarten players start with tee-ball before playing rookie ball. This is a coach-pitch program. The deadline for registration is April 1 or until the roster is full.
• Nipper League softball for girls ages 7 to 9 will run from early April through mid-June. Practices will take place on weekdays with times to be determined. League games will vary between weeknights and weekends. Games will be played at either Unity Park, Highland Park or Murphy Park in Greenfield.
The fee for Montague residents is $50, non-residents $55. MPRD recommends that kindergarten players start with tee-ball before playing Nipper League. This is a coach-pitch league. Registration deadline is March 30 or until the roster is full.
• Senior League softball for girls ages 10 to 12 will run from early April until mid-June, with all games taking place at Murphy Park in Greenfield. Practices will be held weekdays at a time to be determined. Games vary between weeknights and weekends. The fee for Montague residents is $70, non-residents $75. Registration runs through March 30 or until the roster is full.
