SOUTH DEERFIELD — In the wake of the Conway tornado, the Deerfield Police Department wants its residents to know the best protocol during an emergency situation.

“We take this opportunity to remind all of our residents that we have a reverse 911 Code Red system in place,” officer Adam Sokoloski said.

The department highly recommends that all residents register to get alerts from the Code Red system to receive updates both before and after emergencies.

Those who are not already registered for the Code Red system can go online to the town’s website or call town hall.

Residents can be alerted by text message, email or phone call.

This system is more useful for the police because it allows the department to notify the residents without clogging up the phone lines — particularly the 911 line.

Sokoloski urged people to not call 911 in big storms like the one this past Saturday night for a fallen branch or power outage. Instead, contact Eversource for power issues or call the nonemergency line, at 413-665-2606.

As for the events Saturday night, Sokoloski said that there were nine roads affected with tree damage and that everything was back and running the same night, by 9 p.m.

Deerfield Police Department and the Fire Department sent over help to Conway, both Saturday night and Sunday.

“We wish Conway the best of luck in their recovery efforts,” Sokoloski said.
