CHARLEMONT — The Hawlemont Regional School District will hold its fiscal year 2018 public budget hearing Feb. 22 at 6 p.m in the Hawlemont Regional School.
This year’s budget request, for $1.7 million, represents a $92,000 increase, or about 5 percent more than this year’s budget. If this budget is approved by its member towns, Charlemont’s assessment will be $825, 203 (an increase of about $23,320), while Hawlemont’s assessment will be $251,195, an increase of $19,260.
SHELBURNE — Nomination papers are available in the town clerk’s office for the May 15 annual town election. The last day to obtain nomination papers is Friday, March 24. Nomination papers must be returned to the Town Clerk Joseph Judd’s office by March 27 at 5 p.m.
Offices up for election, for three-year terms, are as follows: Selectman, assessor, two trustees for the Shelburne Free Public Library, and one School Committee seat on the Mohawk Trail Regional School District.
One-year terms in this election are: moderator, town clerk and tree warden. Also, a five-year term is up for election for the Planning Board and also for the Recreation Committee.
SHELBURNE FALLS — Last year, John Geyster of Shelburne Falls completed a 5½-month, 2,100-mile hike across the Appalachian Trail. On Friday at 7 p.m. Geyster will give a slide show and talk at the Arms Library, at 60 Bridge St. Traveling with his son and his son’s girlfriend, John Geyster took many stunning photos of the journey through 14 states. There will be a question-and-answer period after the slide show. Geyster, 57, had dreamed of taking the trip since he was an 11-year-old Boy Scout, and has a lot to say about how to plan and prepare for such a journey.
