Slovenian Blaz Pavlic broke the Harris Hill Ski Jump long-distance record with a 104-meter jump Sunday to win the Fred Harris Memorial Tournament in Brattleboro, Vt.
The 18-year-old bested a field of nine in the event, clearing 102 and 104 meters in his two jumps. Only one other jumper cleared 100 feet the rest of the day. Pavlic finished with a score of 285.
“The headwind helped me,” Pavlic said of the historic leap. “It lifted me up and then I just said, ‘Go for it!’”
Brian Wallace of St. Paul, Minn., was second with a score of 255, and Zak Silih, also of Slovenia, was third with a score of 241.5.
The event featured athletes from eight states, Austria and Slovenia.
UMass hockey falls
UMass-Lowell scored the first five goals Saturday night during a 5-0 Hockey East victory over UMass-Amherst at the Mullins Center in Amherst.
UMass Lowell scored once in the first period and twice in both the second and third to earn a five-goal cushion. John Edwardh scored 7 minutes into the game on a one-timer off a pass from C.J. Smith to give the Rivers Hawks the lead they would not relinquish. The teams then went 20 minutes without scoring but UMass-Lowell potted a pair of late second-period goals to take a 3-0 lead into the third. Connor Wilson buried a rebound off a shot from Dylan Zink with just under three minutes left in the period to make it 2-0. Then Joe Gambardella scored 23 seconds after the Wilson goal to make it 3-0.
Smith tallied a goal 1:44 into the third, and Edwardh got his second of the night 13 minutes into the third to make it 5-0.
UMass got a pair of late goals to break the shutout attempt by River Hawks’ goalie Tyler Wall. Joseph Widmar scored his second goal of the season with 3:30 to play when he crashed the net and buried a rebound following a shot by UMass goalie Anthony Petrella. Steven Iacobellis then got his team-leading eighth of the season with 54 seconds to play in the game.
Ryan Wischow stopped 19 shots in the loss.
UMass plays its final home game of the season Friday night when it celebrates Senior Night against 10th-ranked Providence College at 7.
Buckeyes lax edge UMass
Ohio State outscored UMass, 5-3, in the second half Saturday to come back to claim a 8-7 win in a men’s lacrosse match in Columbus, Ohio.
Both teams scored three times in the first quarter but the Minutemen (0-2) got the only goal of the second off the stick of Tyler Bogart on an assist from Dan Muller to take a 4-3 lead into halftime.
The 20th-ranked Buckeyes came back to outscore UMass, 3-2, in the third quarter and the teams went into the fourth tied at 6-6. UMass struck first in the fourth when Bogart scored to lift the Minutemen to a 7-6 lead, but Ohio State came back to score twice in the ensuing 67 seconds and win. JT Blubaugh tied the game 54 seconds after Bogart’s goal. Then Jeff Henrick gave the Buckeyes the lead for good 13 seconds later.
Babe Ruth meeting tonight
The Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball Association will hold its general membership meeting tonight at 7 at St. Kazimeirz Society in Turners Falls.
Topics include league charter, registration dates and preparation for opening day and player scholarships.

WMass Skate Club results
The Western Massachusetts Figure Skating Club had four skaters perform well at the Wallabear Competition Saturday at the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg.
Maggie Provencal of Colrain competed in both the Pre-Free Skate Compulsory and the Pre-Free Skate Program, winning a pair of gold medals. Shannon Terry-Nugent of Greenfield also competed in the Pre-Free Skate Compulsory and the Pre-Free Skate Programs and won a pair of silver medals.
Kaitlin Lavoine of Greenfield earned a bronze medal in the Pre-Preliminary Test Track Program, while Mia Snedeker of Gill won gold medals in the Preliminary Test Track Program and the Preliminary Jump Challenge, and a bronze medal in the Preliminary Compulsory Program.

Basketball
Princeton recruit Jerome Desrosiers finished with 9 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists Saturday to lead Northfield Mount Hermon School to a 88-45 win over Bridgton School in a boys’ prep basketball game in Gill.
The win clinches second place in the New England Prep School Athletic AAA Conference for the Hoggers (24-6), and earns them a first-round bye. NMH will host a semifinal game on March 4.
Maxwell Lorca added 8 points and 10 rebounds for NMH, and Davidson recruit Kellan Grady tossed in 15 points. Andrew Platek, who’s headed to North Carolina, chipped in 14 points, 4 assists and 2 rebounds.
• Also Saturday, Deerfield Academy suffered a 81-61 loss to Tabor School in Deerfield.
Hockey
Deerfield defeated Hotchkiss School, 4-0, in a girls’ prep hockey game Saturday in Salisbury, Conn.
Deerfield improved to 10-6-3 on the year.
• On the boys’ side, Deerfield tied Phillips Exeter Academy, 1-1, in Deerfield.
Squash
The Deerfield boys’ and girls’ squash teams won Saturday in Exeter, N.H.
The boys’ team defeated Phillips Exeter, 6-1, while the girls’ squad picked up a 5-2 win.
Swimming
The Deerfield girls’ swimming and diving team improved to 8-1 on the year with a 105½-80½ win over Loomis Chaffee School Saturday in Deerfield.
• On the boys’ side, Deerfield fell to 5-4 on the year with a 99-87 loss to Loomis.
FCHA win two
Chase Zraunig scored eight times Sunday and Franklin County Hockey Association defeated Nonotuck, 15-2, in a Greater Springfield League Mite Green Division hockey game at Amelia Park Arena in Westfield.
Luca Siano and Carter Schloat each finished with two goals and three assists for FCHA, and Shawn Baumann added two goals. Jack Laurie finished with a goal, and Cordelia Rhoades played well defensively for the second time in as many days. Jay Perry made 13 saves to earn the win.
• On Saturday, Stefan Flaska scored five times, and Laurie added three goals as FCHA dumped Ludlow, 13-6, at the Olympia in West Springfield.
Siano had two goals and an assist, Schloat scored twice, and Zraunig had one goal and one assist. FCHA goalie Hayden Ardrey stood tall to make 13 saves in the victory.
