7 appointed to Master Plan committee

BERNARDSTON — The Board of Selectmen appointed seven members to the recently formed Master Plan Implementation Committee during a Wednesday meeting.

The new members include Wendy Abramson of the Agriculture Commission, Jane Dutcher of the Finance Committee, resident Celt Grant, Bill Hill of the Conservation Commission, Will Pratt of the Board of Health, Chris Wysk of the Planning Board and John Lepore of the Master Plan Steering Committee. They were appointed to three-year terms.

Astronomy program at Leyden Town Hall

LEYDEN — The Council on Aging is hosting an “Awesome Astronomy” program led by Robin Symonds on Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Town Hall.

Symonds, an astronomer and former director of the Charles Hayden Planetarium at Boston’s Museum of Science, will talk about discoveries in the past 20 years that have changed how astronomers view our solar system.

The snow date for “Awesome Astronomy” is Feb. 23.

Following the viewing, David Rowland, former theater director at Northfield Mount Hermon School, will lead a film discussion. Guests are invited to bring popcorn.

Bernardston seeks applicants for PVRS HEART Committee

BERNARDSTON — The Board of Selectmen seeks to appoint a third member to the Pioneer Valley Regional School District’s HEART Committee.

The HEART Committee, or the committee for “Honest Education and Retaining Trust,” would consider topics such as the physical state of the schools, transportation, class size, special education, administrative costs and school choice to recommend improvements that would make the district more financially sustainable.

Officials from each district town are responsible for appointing three members, and the Bernardston Board of Selectmen have already appointed residents Jack Killeen and Robert Kier.

BERNARDSTON — The Board of Selectmen reported during a Wednesday meeting that the recently installed drug kiosk at the Police Department has collected 36 pounds of unwanted prescription medications since September 2016.

“If it were not for this initiative, these medications may have been disposed of improperly,” said Board of Selectmen’s Chairman Andrew Girard, reading from a letter submitted by Police Chief James Palmeri.

“This unit is available anytime to people who want to dispose of unwanted prescription medications, but we urge them to call ahead first so the on-duty officer can be available. This program is a no-questions-asked practice, so people may remain anonymous and completely confidential.

Board OKs Hillside Pizza liquor license

BERNARDSTON — The Board of Selectmen approved Hillside Pizza’s request for a liquor license during a Wednesday meeting.

The board agreed to pass Hillside Pizza’s application on to the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission for review.

Should the ABCC approve Hillside Pizza’s request, it would gain the second liquor license in town. Bernardston is permitted five active liquor licenses at a time.

Selectmen OK money for trash compactor repair

BERNARDSTON — The Board of Selectmen approved a $2,500 repair to a damaged trash compactor at the Transfer Station during a Wednesday meeting.

New voting machine to get trial run

BERNARDSTON — The Board of Selectmen reported during a Wednesday meeting that the town will try out a new voting machine for the May 1 election.

At a previous meeting, Town Clerk Paul Luther said a new machine would cost around $3,000, and the supplier, LHS Associates, would allow the town to try it out at no cost before deciding whether to purchase it.
