A utility pole was damaged and one vehicle was apparently totaled in two crashes Wednesday morning that appeared to be caused by slushy road conditions.

The first crash was in Turners Falls, and the second crash, in which a pickup truck appeared to be totaled, was in South Deerfield.

Before 10 a.m., a local man escaped injury after his vehicle slid on slush and knocked down a utility support pole on First Street in Turners Falls.

Michael Campbell said he had dropped off his children at school and was driving down the hill just past Maple Street when he lost control of the RAV4 he was driving. There was visible damage to the front of the passenger’s side. First Street was closed so Koch’s Automotive could remove the vehicle, and it reopened at 9:57 a.m.

The pole was not carrying any wires. An Eversource employee said on Wednesday the company would likely replace the pole by that night.

Campbell said the vehicle behind him at the time of the crash was driven by an acquaintance who offered to pick him up after the RAV4 was towed and bring him to work at Argotec.

South Deerfield crash

Around 10:30 a.m., a pickup truck slid off River Road in South Deerfield and crashed into a tree, according to a post on the town Police Department’s Facebook page.

“Officer (Jesse) Rosnick determined the vehicle was traveling too fast for the slushy road and had bald tires,” the post read. “The truck appears to be totaled. Air bags and seat-belts kept the occupants safe.”

The Facebook post did not identify the driver or passenger of the truck, who were not injured.

The driver was not cited, but was given a warning, according to police.

The South Deerfield Fire Department and South County EMS were also called in to help out.
