After an emotional win by Hopkins Academy that featured Sam’i Roe scoring his 1,000th career point Wednesday night, Pioneer Valley Regional School was hoping to catch the Golden Hawks a little flat on Thursday.

No such luck.

Hopkins was anything but flat, scoring the game’s first 13 points and going on to a 73-54 victory over the Panthers in Hampshire League boys’ basketball action Thursday night at Reed Gymnasium in Hadley.

“They jumped out on us quick,” said Pioneer head coach Scott Thayer. “We fought back and cut it to four (29-25) at halftime. It (loss) wasn’t for a lack of energy or effort. They’re just really good. Sam’i is a handful.”

Roe nearly matched his output from Wednesday, finishing with a game-high 24 points, while John Earle dumped in 18. Jon Morrison had a big night with 17 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocked shots for the Golden Hawks (9-1 overall, 7-0 HL).

Tucker Llewelyn paced the Panthers with 20 points, while Jacob Hill tossed in 7 and Brendan Emond contributed 6.

“This was a good barometer for us,” said Thayer. “It’s a process, and we just have to work through it.”

Pioneer (7-4, 5-2 HL) hosts Mahar Regional School Tuesday night at 7.

Frontier 56, Greenfield 48 — Carsten Carey poured in career-high 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Frontier Regional School over Greenfield High School, 56-48, in an HL boys’ basketball contest Thursday night at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.

Myles Freeman aided the win with as dozen points, and Jake Meier and Kyle Spencer both threw in 7 for the Red Hawks, who led 28-22 at halftime and 42-32 after three quarters.

Connor Joy and Kevin Mendez both finished with 17 points for Green Wave (3-7, 3-4 HL).

Frontier head coach Ben Barshefsky was impressed with Carey’s performance, but was equally pleased with the efforts of Meier, his 6-foot-2 freshman, as well as Spencer and Sharp.

“He played the best game of his young career,” said Barshefsky. “He posted up hard and set great screens. A lot of Carsten’s points came off Jake’s screens, especially down the stretch.

“I thought (Spencer and Sharp) gave us great minutes at the guard position off the bench,” he added.

Frontier (4-7, 4-4) goes right back to work tonight when it hosts Granby High School at 7:30.
