Mohawk Trail Regional High School got a jump start on its season by winning the girls’ team race in the opening meet of the Mount Institute Ski League season Wednesday at an unseasonably warm Berkshire East Ski Resort in Charlemont.
The Warriors finished with 220 points, followed by the Deerfield Academy A team with 210 and Northfield Mount Hermon A with 181.
Mohawk didn’t have a top-5 skier, but four finished in the overall top 10. Tyler Rice was tops in sixth place, posting a combined two-run slalom time of 84.37. Ashley Lacross placed seventh in 85.03, Taylor Loomis took eighth in 85.26, and Lizzie Herzig wound up 10th in 90.36.
Anna Scott of Deerfield A was the top local finisher, taking second (74.31). Natalie Dorogi of NMH-A came in third (75.65) and teammate Alex Brooke was fifth (83.41), and DA-A’s Ally Edwards was ninth (88.23).
Deerfield A won the boys’ team race with 259 points. NMH A was second with 243 and Eaglebrook School finished third with 214.
Brothers Sevrin and Griffin Sarachek led the Big Green victory. Sevrin placed second in 62.99, and Griffin was third in 63.68. JP Patton came in seventh (69.81) and Ethan Chen was 10th (73.67).
NMH-A’s top finishers were Lane Henry in fifth (68.35) and Eli DiBari in eighth (69.93), while Eaglebrook’s top finishers were Daniel Cho in fourth (67.07) and Nate Hazen in ninth (70.54).
Boys’ hoop
NMH’s bench player combined for 84 points as the Hoggers coasted to a 112-40 win over Deerfield in prep boys’ basketball game Wednesday afternoon at Forslund Gymnasium in Gill.
Calvin Whipple connected on 5 straight 3s and scored 17 first-half points to help NMH (10-3) build a commanding 62-8 at intermission.
Simon Chamberlain added 12 points and 3 rebounds, Jordan Sechan had 11 points Darius Ervin was 3-for-3 from deep for 9 points.
NMH travels to Boston Saturday to face Notre Dame Prep in the BABC Classic at 12:40 pm at Cathedral High School.

Chad Haggerty scored on a breakaway in overtime to help Deerfield edge Loomis Chaffee School, 3-2. … In girls’ hockey, NMH outlasted Deerfield, 3-2. … DA’s boys’ Squash team bested Phillips Academy Andover, 6-1. … DA was swept in swimming by Suffield (Conn.) Academy. the boys lost 106-80, and the girls fell 96-90. … DA fell to Taft School, 47-29, in girls’ basketball.
Suburban 7/8 League
Jake Dodge scored 16 points to lead Turners Falls to a 51-35 victory over Southampton in a Suburban Basketball League grades 7 & 8 boys’ basketball game Tuesday night at in Southampton.
Ryan Bergmann and Nick Lyons each added 10 and Gavin Rubio contributed 8 for the winners.
K of C Hoop Shoot
The Knights of Columbus Council 133 Free Throw Championships will take place Saturday at the Greenfield YMCA at 3 p.m.
The shoot is open to boys and girls ages 9 through 14 (as of Jan. 1) from anywhere in Franklin County.
The shoot is free and winners from each age division will advance to the District Championships on Feb. 11 also at the Greenfield YMCA.

Catamount clinic
Catamount Lacrosse is running a six-week series of lacrosse clinics for beginner/intermediate players at Indoor Action Sports in Greenfield on Monday evenings from 5 to 6 p.m.
The clinics begin on Jan. 23 and are open to boys and girls in grades 3 through 7 and over introductory-intermediate fundamentals. Sticks can be provided and no other equipment is necessary. Cost is $75 for all the clinics or $20 per session.
