GREENFIELD — A heavy police presence descended on Conway Street Sunday night around 8 p.m. after an apparent robbery.

At J.C.’s Market, 259 Conway St., more than five state and local police cars idled. On the side of the road near the market, a Montague police car sat with its lights off.

Police wouldn’t give details on what had happened, but did confirm that they were investigating a robbery.

The officers appeared to be searching for someone or something near the front of the store, which was closed at the time.

Shortly after 8:15 p.m., a police K9 was brought out, and, after a few minutes, seemed to catch a scent. The K9 and a few officers ran up Conway Street, away from Greenfield’s downtown. Soon after, two police cars followed slowly behind.

State Police said the case was being handled by Greenfield’s police department. Greenfield police couldn’t be reached before press time.
