The Gill-Montague Regional School Committee has released more information about the upcoming Turners Falls alumni perspective mascot event.

Mike Cadran, Class of 1968, and Ronald LaRoche, Class of 1947, will be speaking in favor of keeping the mascot.

The presentation is the final of four educational forums the school district organized. It will be held in the Turners Falls High School auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 5.

These forums are for the School Committee and public to learn more about the different perspectives surrounding the issue of whether the high school should keep or change its mascot, currently the “Indians.”

The School Committee had also organized presentations for students at the high school and middle school to teach them more about historical and local Native American perspectives.

For the student presentations, the School Committee is still looking for alumni to speak who are in favor of keeping the mascot. Two already volunteered who are in favor of changing it.

The district is also looking into finding speakers for the student presentations that cover the local specifics of King Philip’s War and the perspective of Native Americans who support keeping the mascot.

The district is also planning a time for students at the school to present their opinions to the School Committee.
