CONWAY — Conway Grammar School students returned to their building at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday after being evacuated to Frontier Regional School earlier due to a gas smell in the school.
Dr. Lynn M. Carey, superintendent of Frontier Regional School District and Union 38, said an odor of gas was detected when the school opened.
Union 38 Facilities Director Robert Lesko, Conway Fire Chief Robert Baker and Police Kenneth Ouimette inspected all areas of the building, including the boiler and oil tanks, and did not find evidence of any odors. Berkshire Gas Co. measured for methane, petroleum and other combustible substances.
Fumes from a malfunctioning oil burner were detected, according to Baker.
The building has gas-fired stoves in the kitchen and is heated with oil.
