As I looked at the striking picture of the Revs. Sheehan and Rierdan on your “Religion” page on Saturday, I realized how fortunate their congregations are. Indeed, many of the Protestant congregations I am familiar with are headed by dynamic female pastors (St. James in Greenfield, St. Michael’s in Brattleboro are two examples).

I grew up a Roman Catholic and graduated from a distinguished Catholic college and have long been troubled by Catholic church’s refusal to ordain women priests. Even with the aging and dwindling numbers of male Catholic priests, and even with our new progressive Pope Francis, I do not see any movement in the direction of ordaining women.

Sadly, I do not expect to see any change in the church’s policy in my lifetime.
