As a community member, former teacher and proud graduate of Mohawk School District, I have become aware of a disturbing behavior that has taken place in our community. Not only did an adult in our community use his power and voice to state a barely veiled critique of the Mohawk community for proudly supporting their students who identify as LGBTQ, he also insinuated (without any substantiation) that there might be backlash against students who “didn’t go along with this agenda.” I wonder how many parents know that they are sending their children to a school with a parent who discourages acceptance and tolerance off all people? While I am surprised and alarmed by the words and beliefs of this community member, I am comforted and filled with pride to know that the staff at Mohawk are going above and beyond to create a supportive, loving, and strong space for all students.
