SOUTH DEERFIELD — The local Knights of Columbus chapter, based at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, gave money to help out seniors in the tri-county region recently.
In a statement, Stan Kawecki, a member of the non-profit organization, wrote the group “donated $1,000 from the proceeds of its annual charity golf tournament to the South County Senior Center.”
Center Director Marlene Johnson said the donation will be used to fund the center’s activities and programs.
Kawecki noted, in reference to helping the needy with clothing, the organization was started in 1882 by “Father Michael J. McGivney to provide financial aid to immigrants and families suffering from the death of the breadwinner. The Knights of Columbus has now grown into a worldwide financial and charitable organization. In 2015, the Knights set a new all-time record for charitable donations and service hours with $175,079,192 in donations and 73.5 million hours of service.”
The local chapter has helped raise that money, contributing to a few different initiatives including raising money for scholarships, donations for refugees in Iraq, and a few natural disaster emergencies that occurred during 2016 in the United States.
